Math
Students have been working hard at showing multiple ways to compose and decompose numbers. They have learned several
strategies and have applied them to their
problem solving. Classes will soon begin
working with measurement and data and learn to
find the area of rectangles
using various objects and
measurements.
Resources
The 6+1 Traits of Writing—This is an approach to
writing where the students will work on different aspects of their
writing. They will have whole group and small group instruction
and then will apply what they learn to their own writing. The
traits are: ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice
and conventions.
The Daily 5 —This program helps to foster literacy inde-
pendence during the literacy block. The students will be learning
how to rotate from station to station. The stations are: Read to
Self, Read to Someone, Work with Words, Work on Writing and
Listen to Reading.
Reading and Writing
Students are continuing to show their love
for reading during Daily 5. They have
learned several rotations, and still have
others to learn in the upcoming months.
Reading—Students will continue to learn
about informational texts. This month
they will explore the main idea and supportive details of texts, discuss the relationship between events, find information
from illustrations, and compare two texts
on the same subject.
Writing— We have started our inquiry project
on Community Action. The students selected a
topic from a list and are gathering facts about it
and why it is important to the community. Then,
they will write an informational piece and an
opinion piece on their topic. Students will also
create a slide presentation to depict their learning
on their topic. We will continue to use the conventions of writing to help
to create these pieces.
