Science and Health
Students focus on collaboration, character traits, and personal uniqueness during the first week of
school. In September, students will:
 Identify and describe the position and motion of objects
 Explain how tools, materials, and skills are used to make things and carry out tasks
Social Studies
In September, students will identify and explain:
 Practices associated with democratic principles
 Roles and responsibilities of effective citizens
 Individual and group contributions to the common good
 Roles and responsibilities of local government leaders in a democracy

wipes, soap, etc.
Please remember to send a water bottle with students. The water fountain is too far away to
send students out for drinks during class.
If you have not purchased a student planner and wish to do so, the cost is $2.75.

Third Grade
Writing and Language
Students begin their first formal writing piece during the first week of school. Each child is writing a
personal narrative that depicts one of their positive character traits. During September, students will:
Vocabulary







Apply sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of words or phrases
Make connections between words and their application to real life using prior knowledge
Differentiate between the concepts of literal and non-literal language
Determine the meaning of words when a prefix or suffix is added to a base (root) word
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text
Use a known root word as a clue to the meaning of an unknown word with the same root
Make connections to describe relationships between scientific concepts using language that
pertains to cause and effect
Writing Process






Brainstorm facts and details about an experience before writing
Reflect on and record experiences with descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings
With support from adults and peers, plan extended writing
Develop writing using descriptions and dialogue
Punctuate dialogue using quotation marks and commas
Peer edit focusing on dialogue and conventions
Use of Language








Identify the difference between common and proper nouns
Identify coordinating and subordinating conjunctions
Check spelling in a paragraph using a reference tool
Form and use possessives
Speak clearly in all areas
Determine when to use pronouns
Create and appropriately capitalize an original narrative title
Match pronouns with the proper antecedent to show agreement
