October

October Newsletter
Second Grade- 2015
In the month of October we will focus in the following areas:
Math:
We will continue working on place value to deepen our understanding. We are
also focusing on using information to create graphs. Students are also
responsible for using graphs to solve story problems through their analysis
of the information.
Reading:
We will be focusing on nonfiction texts. The students will identify and apply
text features as a strategy for comprehension. Students are using
nonfiction texts to ask and answer questions. We are also finding key facts
to help us understand our reading. Please be sure to read with your child
every night. The October reading calendar should be completed by
everyone through the month and returned at the first of November.
Writing:
Students have been working hard to gather information about nutrition. We
have been writing fact fragments to gather our research. We will begin
writing to inform about our food group research. We are learning about
hooks and how to get the readers’ interest. Students will state a fact in
their writing and add supporting details to their paragraph.
Science:
We have been learning about the water cycle. Students should know the
four stages of the water cycle and be able to describe what happens in each
stage. Our science discussion will now lead into landforms. Students will
need to identify a variety of landforms and describe them.
Social Studies:
In Social Studies, we have been talking about leaders and their roles and
responsibilities. We are also discussing the importance of laws and why we
need them.
