Second Grade November Newsletter
2015
Reading
In reading, we continue to work on reading to be informed.
We are practicing using text features, such as table of contents,
index, diagrams, captions, and charts to help us find important
information. Children should be able to identify texts as
informational and have support for how they know this.
Math
Students are working on identifying numbers as odd or even.
They should be able to explain how they know a number is odd or
even. We will begin working on addition and subtraction
strategies this month. Students are working on adding and
subtracting within 20 using mental strategies. Later in the
month, we will begin adding while composing a ten.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we will study the culture of the
Wampanoag: Native Americans. We will also examine the
interaction between the Wampanoag and Pilgrims.
Writing
During this quarter we will write to inform. The students
will continue to use graphic organizers, write a topic sentence,
develop supporting sentences, and write a closing sentence. We
have begun gathering notes using books and digital sources on a
country of interest to the children. The children will write to
inform readers about their country. This information will also be
used to change and rewrite a well-known fairy tale later in the
quarter.
Homework
Please continue to have your child read for fifteen minutes
a day as a part of their daily homework. Reading calendars are
due the first day of the following month. Please return
completed homework on Friday.
