Second Grade December Newsletter
Reading
In reading, we continue to work on Reading to be Informed and Reading for Literacy
Experience. We are practicing using text features, such as table of contents, index, diagrams,
captions and charts, to help us find important information. We will identify story elements, make
predictions, identify character traits, cause and effect events, and evaluate titles. We will
continue our focus on comparing different versions of fairy and folktales. The students will
identify similarities and differences in the texts. We will also be preparing for the upcoming
mClass testing in January. Please be sure to read with your child every night and return the
reading calendar the first of January.
Math
We will continue working on place value and apply it to mental math, story problems, and addition
and subtraction. The children are learning many different strategies to use when adding and
subtracting.
Science
Children are working on experimenting with objects and describing their parts. We will also
use parts to build and explain why parts are needed to construct items. The children will use hand
lenses to observe minute objects.
Writing
We will write to inform. Students have researched a country and written an informative
piece about their country. Students will begin retelling a fairy tale by changing the setting and
characters in their writing to fit the country they researched.
Social Studies
In social studies we are continuing our work with map skills. If you have any maps at home
to share with us, please send them in. Maps could be from a city, park, mall, etc. The possibilities
are endless. Any maps sent in to share will be returned. We will also compare cultures of the
Wampanoag and Pilgrims. Students will also have the opportunity to share their culture and
traditions with the class.
Homework
Please continue to have your child read for fifteen minutes a day as part of their daily
homework. Spelling sorts are on a two week cycle. Reading Calendars are due the first day of the
following month. Please return homework menus on Friday.
