Second Grade January Newsletter 2016 Reading/Language Arts In reading, we continue to work on Reading to be Informed and Reading for Literacy Experience. We are practicing using text features, such as table of contents, index, diagrams, captions and charts, to help us find important information. We will identify story elements, make predictions, identify character traits, cause and effect events, and evaluate titles. Our mClass testing will begin this month for the winter session. Please be sure to read with your child every night and return the monthly calendar at the beginning of the next month. Math We will continue working on place value and apply it to mental math. We are also continuing working on multiple strategies to solve story problems, addition and subtraction. We are working on finding the value of money sets and solving story problems by writing algebraic equations. Our next math topic will be to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes using analog and digital clocks. Please check our school website under second grade math to play some fun games that practice these skills. Science We will identify ways to classify objects using supporting evidence from investigations of observable properties. We are currently examining characteristics of a variety of fabrics. We will also examine and describe minute objects. Writing Students are finishing the writing of their version of a fairy tale. They are changing the fairy tale to fit a new setting of which was researched by the students. We will write to inform and will also begin writing opinion pieces. Students will research topics and use the process of writing to produce informative pieces of writing. Students should include a topic sentence, details, and a concluding sentence in any writing piece we do. Homework Please continue to have your child read each day as part of their daily homework.
