Second Grade February Newsletter 2016 Reading/Language Arts In reading, we continue to work on Reading to be Informed and Reading for Literacy Experience. We are practicing using text features, such as a table of contents, index, diagrams, captions and charts, to help us find important information. We will identify story elements, make predictions, identify character traits, determine cause and effect events, and evaluate titles. Please have your child read for 30 minutes each night this month to participate in the Read-A-Thon. More information will be sent home on Friday, February 5th. Math Students will begin the month on measurement. Students will construct a meter stick and an inch ruler by using math manipulatives. We are using our constructed tools to measure in class. We will begin solving problems using our measurements and comparing them. We will continue to work on strategies for addition and subtraction. Toward the end of the month into March, we will begin working with telling time to the nearest hour, half hour, and quarter hour. Continue to practice counting sets of money at home. Writing Students are learning about technology of the past and present. We are discussing the changes in types of technology and what the technology is used for. Students will chose a type of technology that is important to them. They will work in a group to take notes and then will use their notes to write an opinion piece about that technology. Science We will identify, describe, and observe changes in the sky. Homework Please have your child read for thirty minutes a day as part of their daily homework for this month. Their reading should be recorded on the Read-A-Thon reading log and should be returned by the end date. Please return signed homework menus on Fridays. *****Important Dates***** 2/5 Class Pictures 2/12 Valentine’s Day Party 2/15 No School- President’s Day 2/26 Early Release Day 3/1 PTA Meeting/ Reading Fun Night [email protected] [email protected] [email protected]
