Second Grade March Newsletter

Reading/Language Arts
In reading we are focusing on literary texts and vocabulary usage. We will examine the story
elements and get a deeper understanding of the plot. Students will begin reading poetry and
describing characteristics of poetry. Please be sure to read with your child every night and
return the reading calendar on the first of April.
Math
In math we are working on measurement/data and operations/algebraic thinking. Students will
continue to work on story problems. Our focus is two-step story problems. In the upcoming
weeks students will be identifying time to the nearest five minutes using analog and digital
clocks.
Science
In science we are focusing on earth space sciences and life sciences. Students will continue to
observe the moon for their journal. We will discuss the changes that are observed over time.
If your child is consistently not able to see the moon, choose a couple nights to check on the
computer and see what phase the moon is in. Students will also describe living and nonliving
characteristics. We will learn about habitats and what animals need in order to survive.
Students will begin to learn about a variety of life cycles.
Writing
We will continue writing opinion pieces. The students will continue to use the writing process.
Their writing will include a topic sentence, sentences to support their opinion, and add a closing
sentence. Students will incorporate linking words to help expand their writing.
Supplies
Many students are running out of school supplies. Please replenish your child’s supplies
for his/her pencil box. Supplies that are running low for many children are erasers and crayons.
Some students have lost their scissors. Please check with your child to see what they need.
Donations
As a class, we are in need of extra glue sticks, pencils, tissues, and Clorox wipes for the
classrooms. If you are able to donate any of these items please send them in your child’s
backpack.
