In The Classroom
In Math, we will focus on place value:
decomposing and composing 2-digit numbers in
multiple ways as well as problem solving with 1 and 2
digit numbers (addition and subtraction). The
students will describe numbers by representing the
amount of tens and ones using manipulatives. They
will be able to understand the meaning of the equal
sign and write equations. In addition, each student
will take a timed basic fact test bi- weekly. Test
results will be sent home. Watch how your child
progresses. We encourage reviewing basic addition
and subtraction facts at home daily. This will surely
benefit your son or daughter.
In Reading, we will focus on comprehension of
literary, and informational/explanatory texts. We
will retell the main idea with key details in a story, as
well as write about the problem and solution.
In Writing, our first graders will be writing
informative/explanatory pieces. They will be writing
paragraphs that will include topic sentences, facts,
and a concluding sentence.
In Science the focus will be on living things and
non-living objects. They will describe and illustrate
different movements of non-living objects using
appropriate science vocabulary.
In Social Studies the focus will be on similarities
and differences between cultures: food, shelter,
clothing, traditions, and customs. The students will
be interviewing their family members about
traditions and customs in their house. In addition,
students will be able to ask and answer questions
about how members of the school community meet
their basic needs and wants
