First Grade News March 2016 Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Dr. Seuss was a famous American writer and cartoonist. He is best known for writing children’s books that rhyme. His most popular titles include: The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Green Eggs and Ham. Dr Seuss’ birthday is on March 2nd. We will celebrate his birthday in the classroom by reading and reflecting on some of his famous stories. They will be working on developing fluency as well. In Reading, we will focus on comprehension of Literary Text. They will answer questions about key details and focus on story elements. Stories in Junior Great Books will be a focus for class discussion. In Writing, we will focus on writing opinion pieces, organization, and sentence fluency. Students will work on using verbs, pronouns, adjectives, conjunctions, and commas correctly. In Science and Social Studies, we will work on our environment unit. Human actions that harm the environment will be studied. They will describe places in the environment using geographic characteristics.
