1st Grade Field Trip to the Mooseum
Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
I hope that everybody had a great weekend. The weather was beautiful and the fall season is in the air. I want to
invite everybody to our Open House on Monday, October 12. The Open House will begin at 9:45 a.m. so that
students can complete their morning routines (e.g., unpacking, lunch count, etc.) before parents enter the room.
You can spend as much or as little time as you would like with us until the event ends at 12:00 p.m.
I want to remind you that there is no school for students and teachers on Friday, October 16. I also want to thank
everybody who came out to the PTA meeting last week. I felt that we had good conversation centered on brain
development and the importance of providing appropriate, task-oriented feedback to students.
Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the
Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Carl Bencal
Principal

Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards
This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of persistence,
effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area, each week,
two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the Golden PEM
Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their persistence,
effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden PEM Certificate
as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.

Open House
I would like to invite all parents/guardians to our annual Open House on Monday, October 12, 2015 from 9:45
a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Open House is a great time to take a glimpse of our fabulous staff and students in
action. Remember, this is a day of normal instruction, so please be courteous and respectful of the learning
environment. If you arrive prior to 9:45 a.m., you will have time to socialize in the Media Center until the start
of the Open House. This will give our students and teachers time to complete their everyday routines of
unpacking, ordering lunch, and getting ready for learning. There will be a table set up in the main hallway for
you to sign-in and get a visitor’s badge. We look forward to you joining us!
Korean Language and Culture After-School Program
The Korean Language and Culture After-School Program at Clarksburg Elementary School will start on
Wednesday, November 4, 2015. All students in Grades K-5 are invited to participate. The program will meet the
needs of individual children at all levels of Korean language proficiency. Students will also engage in fun cultural
arts activities along with the language lessons. Students can be first-time learners or heritage speakers! The
registration form is found later in this newsletter or you can visit the Clarksburg Elementary School website if
you would like to access it via the internet.
MCPS Voices on Final Exams and Assessment Strategy
In response to school and community interest in reducing testing and increasing instructional time, MCPS is
revising its assessment strategy. This new assessment strategy includes a plan to eliminate all two-hour semester
final exams in high school courses beginning in 2016–2017, restoring at least two weeks of instructional time
throughout the school year. These exams would be replaced with centrally developed marking period assessments,
which can be given during regular class periods.
Be sure to check out “MCPS Voices,” a new MCPS website with short videos featuring administrators, teachers,
and students answering specific questions about the need for a change in the assessment strategy and the benefits
of using marking period assessments. You can watch the videos at www.montgomeryscholsmd.org, search
“MCPS Voices”.
In addition, there is still time to provide comments on the potential changes to Policy IKA and to the options for
calculating semester grades. All comments must be submitted by Monday, October 19. More information is
available on the MCPS website.
Come to the World of Montgomery Festival!
The World of Montgomery Festival celebrates and displays the rich cultural heritages of Montgomery County
and the Washington, D.C. area. The festival will be held Sunday, October 18, at Montgomery College’s Rockville
Campus, 51 Mannakee Street in Rockville, from noon to 5 p.m.
MCPS is proud to be a partner in this year’s festival. The free event includes an international village, a global
kitchen with chef demonstrations of traditional ethnic food, a craft market, a Parade of Cultures, two performance
stages of traditional dance and music, connections through service, traditional arts, and fun interactive activities
for the whole family. For more information, visit www.worldofmontgomery.com.

Library Media Center Logo Contest
Congratulations to 2nd grader Gianluca Radice! The Clarksburg Elementary School staff selected his entry as
the winner of the library media center’s logo contest. The contest was open to all members of the Clarksburg
family.
Here is what Gianluca wrote about his entry:
The letter “C” represents the word “Clarksburg” by a Cheetah who is using technology and feels very proud of
it. The little heart with a #2 represents the words “Love to.” The letter “L” represents the word “Library” by
a book with a shape of “L” inside the word EARN. If we put them together we will get the word “Learn.”
My library logo tries to communicate that “Clarksburg Cheetahs Love to Learn.” It was so fun to design this
logo with my mother’s help. Both of us had a great time working together.
Gianluca’s logo is now feature on the library media center’s catalog homepage!
Mrs. Taylor would also like to recognize 4th grader Rushi Jain, along with 5th graders, Lilah Ashery, Mohit
Belur, and Rony Hogarth, for entering the contest.
