Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
It was wonderful to see so many families at Clarksburg Elementary School to participate in Parent/Teacher
Conferences. The strength of the partnerships between a school and its families make a huge difference in the
academic success of its students. I encourage all parents to reach out to the school if you have any questions or
concerns regarding the instructional program or your child’s progress.
I want to remind you that Heritage Night is scheduled for Friday, November 20. If you have not done so
already, I encourage you to register to host a table to highlight and showcase your country of origin. You can
find the registration form later in this newsletter. It must be submitted by Tuesday if you wish to have a table.
Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the
Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or
concerns.
Sincerely,
Carl Bencal
Principal

Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards
This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of
persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area,
each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the
Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their
persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden
PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.

Searching for Small Business Owners
Do you own a small business? Do you know a small business owner in Clarksburg? Our 4th graders are
researching our community and will be proposing a new business for Clarksburg as a culminating project. We
think it would be a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from business owners about their
experiences. If you or someone you know is available to speak to our students during the school day, please
contact Mrs. Taylor at [email protected] or by calling the school. Thank you!
Winter Concert
The Clarksburg Elementary Winter Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at 7:00 PM at
Clarksburg High School. Students in Chorus, Advanced Strings, and Advanced Band will be performing. We
will also be performing the concert for the students at Clarksburg ES that same day at 2:00 PM. If you are
unable to attend the evening performance, please make sure you attend the daytime concert. Your children
must attend both concerts. Please mark your calendars.
The required dress for all 4th/5th grade chorus and instrumental students is white shirts/blouses and black/dark
navy pants or skirts. Please make sure your children come to school on Tuesday, December 8th dressed in
black and white with their instruments and music.
Montgomery County Honors Chorus Participants
Congratulations to Mohit Belur, Kayla Cohen-Rohrbaugh, Abigail Davis, and Ashley Pierre who will be
representing Clarksburg Elementary in the 2015-2016 Montgomery County Northwest Honors Chorus in
May. The concert will be on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 8:15 p.m. at Watkins Mill High School. Please
come and support our students as they perform in this very special concert.
Sign Up for the 2015 School-Based Flu Vaccine Clinics
Flu season is upon us. There are simple steps you and your child can take to stay healthy and help prevent the
flu, one of which includes getting a yearly flu vaccine. The Montgomery County Department of Health and
Human Services (DHHS) will conduct free nasal spray flu vaccine clinics (FluMist) in all MCPS elementary
schools during the week of December 14, 2015.
All clinics are free, but registration is required due to limited vaccine supplies. Parents/guardians must sign up
for their child(ren) to receive the flu vaccine by contacting the school health room. Health room staff will send
home the Vaccine Information Statement and parental consent forms only to the families who contact the health
room to set up an appointment. For more information, visit the DHHS website at
http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/flu or call 311.
