Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
I cannot believe that it is already Thanksgiving Week. I would be remiss if I did not thank my unbelievable
staff for being “warm demanders” and always working so hard to help our students learn in a positive
educational environment. I also want to thank our parents who support the school in unimaginable ways and
the students who bring their best effort each and every day. I feel very fortunate to be the principal of
Clarksburg Elementary School and I want you to know how very thankful I am.
It was wonderful to see so many families at Heritage Night. It was an incredible evening which allowed us to
celebrate our wonderful diversity and learn about our storied and unique history. I want to thank the members
of the Heritage Night Committee and the Clarksburg Historical Society for making the event so meaningful and
the parents and children who shared their culture with us for making the event so memorable.
We have any early release day on Wednesday. Therefore, students will be dismissed at 1:20 p.m. I hope that
everybody has a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Weekend.
Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the
Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or
concerns.
Sincerely,
Carl Bencal
Principal

Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards
This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of
persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area,
each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the
Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their
persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden
PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.

Final Frontiers
Final Frontiers is a countywide competition in which fifth grade students from elementary schools in
Montgomery County compete in a variety of engineering challenges. Clarksburg Elementary School placed
second in the Mystery Event. In this competition, student teams were given designated materials, a problem to
solve, and fifteen minutes to construct a device to meet the challenge. Mrs. Dryman and Mrs. Earp would like
to congratulate our Fifth Grade Final Frontiers Team. The team consisted of five of our fifth grade students:
Mohit Belur, Nikkolas Duong, Ananya Ginjupalli, Siri Gollapudi, and Mythili Menon.
In the individual competitions, Mohit placed second in the Lunar Bridge Challenge. He constructed a bridge
out of balsa wood that held two bricks. Nikkolas placed third in his challenge. He built a machine that
projected clay pieces at a target while competing against an opponent. All of our student competitors did a
fantastic job against the stiffest competition that we have ever faced.
Searching for Small Business Owners
Do you own a small business? Do you know a small business owner in Clarksburg? Our 4th graders are
researching our community and will be proposing a new business for Clarksburg as a culminating project. We
think it would be a wonderful opportunity for our students to hear from business owners about their
experiences. If you or someone you know is available to speak to our students during the school day, please
contact Mrs. Taylor at [email protected] or by calling the school. Thank you!
Winter Concert
The Clarksburg Elementary Winter Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at 7:00 PM at
Clarksburg High School. Students in Chorus, Advanced Strings, and Advanced Band will be performing. We
will also be performing the concert for the students at Clarksburg ES that same day at 2:00 PM. If you are
unable to attend the evening performance, please make sure you attend the daytime concert. Your children
must attend both concerts. Please mark your calendars.
The required dress for all 4th/5th grade chorus and instrumental students is white shirts/blouses and black/dark
navy pants or skirts. Please make sure your children come to school on Tuesday, December 8th dressed in
black and white with their instruments and music.
Cold Weather
As you can feel, the cold weather is beginning to settle into the Washington DC area. This means that it is very
important to dress your children appropriately as they leave the house in the morning. As long as the conditions
remain safe, students will continue to have outdoor recess.

Sign Up for the 2015 School-Based Flu Vaccine Clinics
Flu season is upon us. There are simple steps you and your child can take to stay healthy and help prevent the
flu, one of which includes getting a yearly flu vaccine. The Montgomery County Department of Health and
Human Services (DHHS) will conduct free nasal spray flu vaccine clinics (FluMist) in all MCPS elementary
schools during the week of December 14, 2015.
All clinics are free, but registration is required due to limited vaccine supplies. Parents/guardians must sign up
for their child(ren) to receive the flu vaccine by contacting the school health room. Health room staff will send
home the Vaccine Information Statement and parental consent forms only to the families who contact the health
room to set up an appointment. For more information, visit the DHHS website at
http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/flu or call 311.
