Winter Break – No School for Students and Teachers
Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
As I was raking the final leaves from my yard while wearing shorts, I could not help but think that it felt as if
we were getting closer to Spring Break rather than Winter Break. I am sure that we will pay for these beautiful
December days at some point in January and February.
I want to take the time to acknowledge the wonderful performances by our fourth and fifth grade students at last
week’s Winter Concerts. Their talents were definitely on display for all to see. I also want to thank all of the
families who attended Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A on Thursday evening. It is always great to get together and
build our community while raising money for the school.
All are welcome to join us at our second NAACP Meeting of the year on Tuesday night at 7:00. I am looking
forward to another night of rich dialogue. Also, please be aware that we will be sending home interim reports
for the second marking period this week with your students.
Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the
Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or
concerns.
Sincerely,
Carl Bencal
Principal

Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards
This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of
persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area,
each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the
Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their
persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden
PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.

The Sharing Tree
A special thank you goes out to all of the families who have participated in our Sharing Tree Project so far this
year. If you would still like to participate, The Sharing Tree Project runs through Tuesday, December 22.
Please bring in any of the following items: new or gently used winter coats, mittens, gloves and/or hats. All
donations will be given to the Interfaith Clothing Center, which provides assistance to needy families in
Montgomery County. Thank you for your thoughtfulness and support!

2015 School-Based Flu Vaccine Clinics
A FluMist vaccine clinic will be held at Clarksburg ES on Monday, December 14 during school hours. Please
call the health room at 301-353-8060 or email [email protected] if you are interested in having
your child receive the Flu Mist nasal spray. If you have any questions please call the health room staff.
Attendance and School Communication Form
In an effort to streamline the home/school communication process, we are trying to simplify things to help
parents. Please take a moment to review the following document titled, A Note to Clarksburg ES. By using
these pre-printed forms, it will save you the time to hand write a personal note. You can print and fill out some
of these forms to keep on hand should the need arise. You can choose to use these forms or continue to write
your own note - both will still be accepted by the school. We are hoping this added convenience will make it
easier for everyone. Thank you.

FREE Winter PopUp Library from StarWalk Kids Media
All 578 of the high quality eBooks in the StarWalk Kids Media library—including 44 narrated, Spanishlanguage titles!—can be used by all students, free of charge, from December 23 through January 3.
We know that it is important for children to keep reading during winter break and access to eBooks is one way
to meet this goal.
One important note: If you want to read the StarWalk Kids eBooks on an iPad or an Android tablet, you will
first need to download the free "SWKids Reader" app from either the iTunes store, the Google Play store, or the
Amazon App store (if you are using a Kindle Fire HD). Once you have the app, use PopUp as both
your username and password.
