Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians,
I hope that everybody had a wonderful weekend. We are going to be very busy this week at school, especially
on Tuesday. Tuesday will be the kick-off for our Read Across America Week Celebrations. All students are
invited to wear their pajamas to school and bring their favorite book from home to share with friends. The
students will attend our Read-A-Thon Assembly on Tuesday morning. On Tuesday evening, the first grade
students are having a concert at 6:15 p.m. Reading Fun Night will follow the concert at 6:45 p.m. We already
have over 100 families registered to attend this event. There will be a brief PTA Meeting following Reading
Fun Night. Daycare will be provided for children in the All Purpose Room during the PTA Meeting.
Read Across America Day is Wednesday, March 2. It coincides with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Please read the
information below regarding Read Across America Week. There is a different theme for each day. It is not too
early to start planning your outfits for the entire week. It should be a lot of fun.
Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the
Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or
concerns.
Sincerely,
Carl Bencal
Principal

Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards
This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of
persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area,
each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the
Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their
persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden
PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.

PTA News and Information
Yearbook Pictures
Our Yearbook Coordinator, Ms. Suzane Cypriano, is getting ready to put the finishing touches on this year’s
yearbook. Please send us any pictures that you might have taken at school events. The best way to do this is to
put the digital pictures either on a CD or on a pen drive with your name and contact information clearly written
on the envelope and drop them off at the school. You can send them in with your child too. The CDs and pen
drives shall be returned promptly to your child at the school. The last day to send in your pictures is Friday,
March 11. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Yearbook Coordinator via e-mail at
[email protected].
MadScience
We still have a few spots available for MadScience registration. The classes will be held on Fridays beginning
March 4. The classes run from 3:55 to 4:55 p.m. You can register online at www.dc.madscience.org. If you
have any questions, please contact our Mad Science coordinator, Ms. Christy Graybeal, via e-mail at
[email protected].
PTA Meeting
The CES PTA cordially invites all parents to attend a short PTA Meeting on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:45p.m. The
meeting will take place directly after Reading Fun Night. Child care will be provided for free of cost!

We are going to ask that these individuals to respond to a few questions about their work via an online survey in
mid-April. Please contact Mrs. Daria Taylor at [email protected] or complete this very brief survey

Box Tops for Education Collection Drive
Ms. Howard’s class came close to catching Ms. Ouska’s class, but Ms. Ouska’s class retained the lead in this
spring’s Box Top Collection Drive. Her class collected 1399 Box Tops in January and February! Including
anonymously donated ones, Clarksburg Elementary School collected a total of 7348 Box Tops this winter. At
10¢ each, that’s $734.80!
Although this collection drive is over, please continue to collect Box Tops for the next drive.
