THE CLARKSBURG CHEETAH Week of May 2, 2016 THIS WEEK: Thur., May 5 Fifth Grade Class Picture A LOOK AHEAD: Wed., May 11 Northwest Montgomery County Elementary Schools Honors Chorus Concert - Watkins Mill High School - 8:15 p.m. Fri., May 13 Maryland Green Schools Annual Youth Summit Dear Clarksburg Elementary School Parents/Guardians, I hope that everybody had a safe and enjoyable weekend. It is hard to believe that it is already May. Although we only have about six weeks left in the school year, we still have so much to accomplish and learn. All third, fourth, and fifth grade students will be taking the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments throughout the month. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding the administration of these statewide, federally mandated assessments. In this newsletter, there is a place for fourth grade parents to sign-up to help make the Fifth Grade Promotion Ceremony a success. If you are able to assist, please let us know. Your assistance will allow the fifth grade parents to enjoy the ceremony. This courtesy will be extended to you next year, so please think about paying it forward. Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Carl Bencal Principal 1 Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area, each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin. The Maryland State Department of Education approved the MCPS request for a one-day waiver of the 180-day school year requirement on April 18. The school year was previously scheduled to end Friday, June 17, and now will end with an early release day on June 20. June 17 will be a full instructional day. MCPS was closed for six days this winter due to inclement weather that left many roads and sidewalks in the county impassable. MCPS already had four emergency weather days built into the school calendar. With the state waiving one day from the requirement, MCPS has implemented its weather contingency calendar, which adds one make-up day to the end of the school year. Northwest Elementary Schools Honors Chorus Concert We would like to invite you to the 2016 Montgomery County Public Schools Northwest Elementary Honors Chorus Concert. The concert will be at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Watkins Mill High School. Mohit Belur, Kayla Cohen-Rohrbaugh, Abigail Davis, and Ashley Pierre are this year's participants representing Clarksburg Elementary. Please come and show them your support. Several members of the MCPS community will be conducting readings at the festival and there will be many programs, workshops, and activities in the Children’s Village that are designed to promote interest in reading and writing. For more information, visit gaithersburgbookfestival.org/. Dear 4th Grade Parents/Guardians – Help Needed!
