The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments begin this week. It is important that your child gets plenty of sleep and has a good breakfast to perform at his/her best on these assessments. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding the administration of these statewide, federally mandated assessments. I want to thank the PTA and all of the parents for their generosity during Staff Appreciation Week. We were treated with bagels on Monday, donuts on Tuesday, after lunch sweet treats on Wednesday, lunch on Thursday (sponsored by the fourth grade parents), and gift bags on Friday. On behalf of the staff, thank you. We really did feel appreciated. Please see the additional information below to learn about more of the exciting things that we are doing and the Montgomery County Public School system is offering. Contact the office if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Carl Bencal Principal Damascus Lions Youth Night - Thank You! We would like to recognize Daianary D, a fifth grade student in Ms. Ouska’s class, for volunteering to present at the Damascus Lion’s Youth Night on Tuesday, May 3. The Damascus Lions’ support allowed us to enjoy our first Cheetahs Enjoying Stories All School Reading Event. Daianary spoke with poise and confidence as she explained how our fifth grade students led small groups of students as they read and discussed the book What Do You Do With An Idea? by Kobi Yamada. Thank you Daianary for being a leader and representing our school so well! Clarksburg HS will be Hosting a Parent Academy Workshop on Monday, May 23 The workshop title is “Recognizing and Reacting Responsibly to Child Abuse and Neglect for Volunteers”. Effective early intervention is essential to ensuring that an abused child or adolescent develops into a healthy and productive adult. During this workshop, attendees will learn early identification signs of child abuse and neglect, and system-wide procedures for recognizing, reporting, and reacting responsibly to child maltreatment. MCPS staff will facilitate this workshop. 3 Golden PEM (Persistence, Effort and Motivation) Awards This year, part of our School Improvement Plan focus is on helping students to increase their levels of persistence, effort, and motivation in relation to their learning. To highlight students’ achievement in this area, each week, two students from every class will be awarded The Golden PEM Award. Teachers will choose the Golden PEM Award winners based on the students’ consistent performance throughout the week related to their persistence, effort, and motivation in the classroom setting. Recipients of the award will take home a Golden PEM Certificate as well as have their names listed in the Principal’s Weekly Parent Bulletin.
