Meeting Notes:
NEW BUSINESS:
7.1
Grimm + Parker provided a Powerpoint presentation which included precedent images,
revised exterior character sketches and floor plans. The precedent images included
examples of materials and design elements that are similar to those in the proposed design
including: masonry & glass, metal panels, canopies, colonnades, vertical and horizontal
sunshading devices and general massing volumes. The proposed material palette expresses
the nature of the STEM program and utilizes the building as a teaching tool. The following
comments on the exterior renderings were expressed:
•
South elevation: several design options were shown demonstrating various window
patterns, canopy/shading devices and metal panel colors. The regular window
patterns were preferred over the more random window patterns. The sloped
columns at first floor only were preferred over the larger 3.story sloped columns. The
design team will continue to study metal panel color options thru the DD phase.
•
West elevation: Two options were presented to provide a welcoming main entrance
feature. One option was a projected lobby volume that is very similar to the north
bus entry volume. This option also adds building volume by extending the 3.story
glass volume to the west. The second option was an inset entry volume with a
roof/shroud feature that creates a dramatic and unique entrance sequence. This
option provides sunshading for the glass, is more distinct from the north entrance and
reduces the building volume relative to the first option. It was also noted that the
plaza paving & landscaping directly in front of the entrance will extend thru the
parking area and further reinforce the main entry procession.
•
Auditorium: a sloped roof is proposed at the auditorium to allow for overhangs
above the clerestory windows to provide sunshading at the south elevation. The
clerestory windows provide natural light in the auditorium during non.performance
uses during the day; window treatments will be provided to shade windows during
performances.
•
Building Signage: The school name is shown on the south elevation music wing to
serve as a public sign to the community on Randolph Rd. Signage will also be
provided at the west entrance either on the entry canopy or mounted on the
façade.

Versions of the renderings were also shown with the future additions on the east
portion of the building; the group agreed that the building massing that includes the
future additions is more successful than the massing without the additions. The future
additions will be bid as an add alternate.
7.2
Revisions to the floor plan were presented as follows:
• Child Development was moved to the NE corner at the end of the PE corridor.
• Social Studies office and English office were relocated to the west façade to receive
natural light.
• Greenhouse was moved to the SW corner as part of the glassy corner element on
the facades.
• The central main stair on the courtyard now includes a tiered seating area which will
enhance the student gathering space between Dining and Student Services suite.
• Concessions was moved next to the Auditorium and backs to the Kitchen.
7.3
WHS staff requested that the service drive has the ability to be closed off to prevent the
public from parking there. Drive access will be investigated along with requirements of fire
dept access.
