April 12, 2012 WHEATON HIGH SCHOOL MODERNIZATION SCHEMATIC DESIGN MEETING NO. 6 21202.10/075 ATTENDEES: See attached sign in sheet. Meeting Notes: NEW BUSINESS: 6.1 Grimm + Parker presented an updated site plan, updated floor plans and renderings for review. 6.2 The updated site plan was presented. The bus loop and parking areas were revised to minimize interaction between cars and buses for safety reasons. Proposed stadium building locations are indicated along the bus loop at the gateway to the stadium field. A sidewalk is provided for pedestrian access to the main entrance from the bus stop at the corner of Randolph Rd. and Dalewood Drive, and a path was shown to provide access from the building to the softball field and the tennis courts. Visitor bleachers have been provided at the stadium to seat approximately 200 people. 6.3 Renderings of the building were presented. Methods used to break down the massing of the building were discussed. The use of a palette of material (brick, metal panels, glass and stone) was discussed. The use of these varied materials is proposed to break down the scale of the building. Shading techniques of wing walls at the west elevation are included to maximize glazing at that elevation. More glazing is provided at the north elevation. 6.4 Plan revisions were shown eliminating interior non1rectilinear angles from the plan. The character of the interior spaces is not adversely affected by these revisions. It was explained that rectangular classrooms are more flexible and more cost effective. All adjacencies were maintained. The central stair near the dining area has been developed to create congregation opportunities. The Child Development labs were relocated adjacent to the admin area to be closer to the parking lot for drop off and exterior access. 6.5 Comments on the schematic design are as follows: • Concern was expressed about some interior offices not having operable windows. Some of this concern is about the lack of ventilation opportunities if systems are not operational. Participants were advised that the HVAC system will be completely different than the current school. The new building will have heating and air conditioning available at all times during the year, not after a switch over date as is currently done. • Concern was expressed about some offices not having daylighting. Participants were advised that LEED requirements mandate that all classrooms have daylighting, with the exception of computer labs. The design team has provided as much daylighting for offices as was possible for the number of spaces required for the building. Participants were advised that all classrooms will be wired for voice over internet protocal (VOIP), however the decision on whether phones are provided will be up to the school and decided at a later date. A suggestion was made to provide calming elements in the guidance area (i.e. waterfall device). These items will be discussed during the ¼ scale meeting held at the next design phase. Staff advised that they would prefer Child Development be relocated to the northwest corner of the building. It was expressed that the additional walking distance to this location would not be a detriment to the program, and would be less disruptive to the remainder of the school. Concern was expressed about the south elevation of the school, along Randolph Road and at the southwest corner, as this is the most prominent elevation. The participants expressed a desire for a more modern “Wow factor” in the elevations, particularly at this elevation. The design team will continue to develop this elevation. Concern was expressed about the entrance canopy. Many felt that it was not in character with the remainder of the elevation. The design team will continue to develop the canopy design. DD6.6 Mr. Doug Eder of Oak Contracting was introduced. Oak Contracting will be the Construction Manager for the project. The Construction Manager will be helping to develop the phasing for the project during the design phase, assist with constructability issues, and be responsible for constructing the new facility. DD6.7 It was determined that an additional schematic design meeting will be needed to finalize the design process. The next meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at 2:30 pm. Location to be determined. NEXT MEETING: 1. The next schematic design meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. Location to be determined. THESE NOTES ARE THE OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE MEETING AND REPRESENT THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE WRITER OF ITEMS DISCUSSED AND DECISIONS MADE DURING THIS MEETING. WE SHALL ASSUME OUR UNDERSTANDING TO BE CORRECT UNLESS WRITTEN NOTICE TO THE CONTRARY IS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION WITHIN SEVEN DAYS.
