February 23, 2012 WHEATON HIGH SCHOOL MODERNIZATION SCHEMATIC DESIGN MEETING NO. 3 21067.10/075 ATTENDEES: See attached sign in sheet. Meeting Notes: NEW BUSINESS: 2.1 Grimm + Parker provided a Powerpoint presentation which provided photos and a review of the field trip to Woodson High School and Phelps High School in Washington D.C., a review of the site strategies and options 1 and 4 explored at the last meeting as well as a new option for consideration, based on some comments from the group. 2.2 Members of the school staff, MCPS and Grimm and Parker Architects attended the trip to the D.C. high schools. Following is a list of summary points for each school. Woodson High School (a comprehensive high school): • School is designed around the STEM program • School is organized around a vertical core (it is an urban school on a small site). • There is a lot of transparency between corridors and classrooms / project rooms, and lots of natural daylighting. • There are numerous breakout spaces and project based learning spaces throughout the school. Phelps High School (a CTE school): • There are views into lab spaces from corridors and classrooms (usually on a different level. • There are large windows and skylights in the lab spaces which provide ample natural daylighting for the spaces. • Piping is exposed and color coded in corridors and labs. 2.3 Option 1 was presented. This scheme provided administration at the northwest corner of the building, providing oversight of both entrances. The public spaces are provided with the Gym to the north side, auditorium and music rooms to the south, and the cafeteria between these spaces. 2.4 Option 4 was presented. This scheme provided administration at the northwest corner of the building, providing oversight of both entrances. The public spaces are provided with the Cafeteria to the north side, auditorium and music rooms to the south, and the gym between these spaces. 2.5 A new option (#5) was presented for consideration to address concerns about the desire to have the gymnasium and auditorium closer to the parking areas. In this scheme the CALVERTON / MCLEAN 11720 Beltsville Drive Suite 600 / Calverton MD 20705 / Tel 301.595.1000 / Fax 301.595.0089/ grimmandparker.com Wheaton High School Modernization Schematic Design Meeting No. 3 Page No. 2 Auditorium, Dining and Gym are located on the north side of the building and the classroom wing is to the south, along Randolph Rd. To address previous concerns about noise at classrooms located along Randolph Rd., G+P showed an aerial view of a school project in Virginia which is located at the intersection of Route 50 and a road similar in size to Randolph. Based on discussions w/ the principal, there have been no noise issues at the school. Windows at the school are typical double glazed units. 2.6 The group broke into 3 smaller groups to work together with scale model pieces of the building program to discuss concept designs and program adjacencies, with the main goal of placing the 3 large assembly spaces of the program (gym, auditorium and dining). The groups started with the base layouts for options 1, 4 and 5, and made modifications. 2.7 Comments and discussion topics that resulted from the model play are as follows: For Option 1: • Child Care vs. Wellness – drop off, outdoor play, courtyard access? • Child Care on bus loop at gym? • Assistant Principal – consider on each floor • Special Ed. on main street and first floor • Media in front of building For Option 4: • ESOL near foreign language • Locker rooms near gym on first floor; dance, wrestling and weight rooms on 2nd fl. • Locate 2 computer rooms adjacent so they can be combined for testing • Need a concessions space near the gym and auditorium • Special Ed. SCB rooms must be on first floor, LFI and other special ed. rooms can be on other levels. • Can Guidance be upstairs • Highlight the tech. program at front corner of the building • Art could be on the second floor For Option 5 • Carefully design “back” elevations • Auditorium location not needed to be totally adjacent to parking • Location by fields ok • Scheme 5 courtyard is a nice feature • Media Center should be in the middle of the school – centrally located • Media Center on 2nd floor allows academy to be on 1st floor • Locate department offices next to each other • Restrooms on one core and offices on another • Admin. doesn’t oversee both entrances 2.8 Additional comments from “around the room” • Natural daylighting in small offices that are occupied consistently is important • The elevation on Randolph Rd. is important 2.9 The team will continue to develop Option 1, but with a classroom wing similar to Option 5 (one large courtyard). Adjacencies will continue to be reviewed and discussed at upcoming meetings. A separate meeting will be scheduled w MCPS and Wheaton staff to discuss academies. 2.10 The Architect asked the meeting attendees to respond to three questions in writing on index cards that were handed out. The questions were as follows: Wheaton High School Modernization Schematic Design Meeting No. 3 Page No. 3 1. What do you feel are the most critical adjacencies in the building? 2. What ways can the building showcase the unique programs of the school? 3. What ways can public spaces enhance the experience of the new Wheaton HS? 2.11 Following are the responses to the questions above: • School Store should be near the cafeteria. • • • • Admin. control on parking and loop corner. Loop entry only to commons, feels like you have arrived at auditorium Main street to stadium Stadium / commons shared activities and concessions. • • Media Center on second floor – 1 level up, 1 level down. Prefer Admin. view of both loop and parking. • • • Showcase PLTW program to 1st floor Media Center on 2nd floor. Locate department offices near each other. • Common use areas (Gym/Auditorium) closest to entrance/parking. Cafeteria / commons adjacent to common use. Glass walls. • NEXT MEETING: 1. The next schematic design meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 8, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. at Thomas Edison School of Technology.
