STUDENT FORUM SUMMARY:
Grimm + Parker held information gathering sessions with students from various classes arranged by Wheaton HS staff.
A brief overview of the Feasibility Study and design process was given to the class. Students were then asked to
respond to 6 questions to help define the student’s vision for the new Wheaton HS. Students responded to the
questions using notecards, which have been recorded as the following:

Band room, memorable but not successful, engineering room, courtyard, Promethean boards
The fields that surround the building and the courtyard in the middle is a good attraction to the school
Baseball field, gym, auditorium
Library, computer rooms, and the classrooms are successful
The three spaces that are good at this school are main lobby, lunch room and computer labs
The courtyard, the front of the building to hang out in, and the lunch room. The overall theme of the
building.
Library is nice, entrance is big, computer labs are good
The courtyard, the engineering workplace, the main gym
The front of the building, football field
The courtyard
Auditorium – how big it is and the flags hanging from the top; big hallway in front of auditorium, awards
in entrance
st
Murals around the school, courtyard near the auditorium, Mac lab on the 1 floor, auditorium & size of it
Honestly, there is nothing I like about the school
I like the little & large courtyard, the hallway with windows, and the murals. Child development area.
Mural – two stairs leading to the mural – auditorium
Mural, the auditorium, the double stairs leading to the mural
The benches next to the window, the big auditorium, and the knight armor in the front office with the
awards

Keep all of the Wheaton murals that have been made, have an open park with lots of benches, like the big
space in the auditorium
The murals around the school, like the auditorium
Murals, lots of computers, courtyard
Auditorium, Room 306, class in front; lab area in back for science classes, the courtyard
The courtyard, engineering room, the art room
The murals, the skylight in the College Tracks (program) area, and the courtyard; how big the auditorium
is

Open space during lunch, auditorium, and college/career center
The small courtyard, the size of the auditorium
The courtyard, the gym, and the art room
Digital music lab, media center
Murals, year photo hallway, courtyard
Gym, entrance/exits, courtyard
The large auditorium that holds so many and has a great stage that can hold so many people on it. This is
open to the whole community that would want to have community events and gather together. This is
Wheaton’s legacy to have such a big auditorium; the murals around the school, the work of arts have
made their mark in the old school building.
The courtyard is really nice addition to the school’s environment. I also like the large number of windows
which make the rooms brighter and more suitable for learning.
Lots of different classes, the school isn’t too big. Artwork by students.
The courtyard is good
The mural near the cafeteria, the view of the courtyard, murals around the school
The importance in this school that we have is mostly in our sports around the school like football and
baseball
Computer classes are close to each other and help create a sense of community between computer
students
Windows with large enough window sills to sit on; keep the garden
Library has lots of chairs and tables to sit and read or study; we have lots of murals and painting that
decorate Wheaton
A lot of school spirit colors around the walls, small classes facilitate learning for students
nd
Knight statue in main lobby; windows on 2 floor in front of school, the school is a figure 8, courtyard
The mural around the cafeteria; the awards showcase that is now around the main office
Some of the portraits painted on the wall by students
Mural/drawings next to cafeteria
Spaces in the middle of the building (courtyard), being able to sit outside on nice days
Lobby room is good

The number of computers & computer rooms available, library room is okay, I like the places to sit
The hallway intersection in the basement by the gym is really open and has a high ceiling – I think that
should be incorporated; the numbers of windows in each classroom is quite pleasant
Locker space, murals, courtyard space that has grass and plants – nature; auditorium space
Murals/drawings by cafeterias and halls; lobby in the front; courtyard, high ceilings, a lot of stairs
Main lobby and the area where College Tracks is located
Courtyards, murals
The courtyard, for the reason it is barely used by being closed for breaking fire safety regulation
Auditorium, paintings
Good rooms for engineering, courtyard, can eat outside
The courtyard, the multiple entrances, you can’t get lost in this building
The engineering room – successful; the courtyard is nice; the art room – memorable/successful; really nice
auditorium
Baseball field, gym
You can’t get lost in this building; a spacious lunchroom
The courtyard, digital art room, vending machine with arm thing
Lots of computer labs; great hallway system; the engineering room

New band room, gyms/bleachers, windows
The gym lockers rooms, staircases, and their placement; the narrowness, and the appeal of each room
and how each object is placed and how dim it really it
Band room, lunch room, baseball dugout
Lunch room, football field, and larger stairwells
Air circulation, windows, a courtyard, wider stairs
A place outside where you can eat lunch and hang out and not get harassed by security; a new paint job
throughout the school
Soccer/football field; cafeteria needs to be bigger; stairwells need to be bigger; gym too small
The courtyard should be improved to increase space; the lunchroom should be bigger and more
organized; the space in the halls are too small
We have a lot of weird rooms (oddly shaped), bad class placement (have to walk far); stairs are not in
good places and they are always crowded
The little courtyard; football field; big staircase
Bathrooms are too small and bigger cafeteria; stairwells too cramped and crowded; courtyard too small
and band room needs improvement
Larger and more convenient staircases; update the bathrooms (newer sinks, automated hand soap, blow
driers), larger lockers, wider hallways
More mirrors in the bathroom, more entrances in the bathroom, bigger cafeteria, larger / accessible
courtyard
Larger bathrooms (more mirrors, more space in stalls), windows in the auditorium, an outside study,
wider lockers, escalators
Dance studio, bigger gym, courtyard big enough
Dance studio, bigger lunch lines, another gym, a courtyard, ramps for special ed kids
More space in the hallways, more stairs and open the outside lunch hang out, separate classes
Larger gyms, updated bathroom, better science laboratories
Bigger gym, bigger hallways, closed off classrooms
Update bathroom, place stairs at more local places, classroom big enough for space but not crowded with
desks. Change the band room by adding new cubbies for storage. Something so the sound is better, new
practice rooms
Our gym is too small, there’s barely enough space to contain the whole student body; the two gyms need
to be connected, they’re too far away from each other; some classrooms are too small and too close –
sound travels between classes

The stairs, the cafeteria, library, computer rooms, auditorium, gym
The school is very dark, we need more windows; we should be able to access the courtyards because the
small one is really not that presentable and the big one looks very nice but can never really access it.
More spacious and convenient stairwells.
No windows, small space
Dance studio, a good computer lab, the locker room and gym
The bathrooms, the classrooms, lockers are small
Bathrooms, gyms, courtyard, big grand fields
Bathrooms, the cafeteria, the locker rooms, band room
Courtyard is too small; staircases don’t look nice, too few. First floor.
Computer labs, open spaces (halls), lounge
Hallways are tight, bathroom stalls should be bigger, study areas, sitting, improve natural lighting (large
windows), ecofriendly, garden for green team, arts
Bigger hallways, stairs, and bigger gym
Stairwell, windows don’t open, faster computers
Larger stairwell, bigger bathroom, and cafeteria needs to be bigger
Small cafeteria, tight stairwells, small gym
The locker rooms, lunch room, location, team rooms, the stairs
Media center, air conditioning
Cramped hallways & staircases, little natural lighting, poor sports facilities
Class size, auditorium, separation/dimension of the hallway, locker
The hallways and the stairs in the school should be expanded so that the students can walk freely in these
areas
Too many unused features, hallway intersections too crowded
Sunlight in stairwell can be blinding
The halls are very congested due to one main intersection per floor. There are only two stairwells that
access all three floors, making them overcrowded. Elevator access is only on the ends of the building, very
difficult to reach when on crutches. The cafeteria needs more lines.
The hallways that could be upgraded and the restrooms; also more stairwells to enable students to move
about more easily, hallways should be wider
Very long hallways, stairs are inconvenient
Only place to sit and eat is the cafeteria and it fills up quickly so most students sit outside in the halls or in
classrooms. Also, WHS is an old building (cracked stairs, faded paint, beat up furniture).
Study hall environment is boring; places where students could hang out to study in groups are
uncomfortable. The inside of the school looks null. It makes students feel not enough motivated to be in
school. There’s no basketball court on the outside. Stairs are boring, they should be cleaner, wider, and
not accessible to grass or outside so students don’t go out to smoke. Better cafeteria tables.
Lower gym, cafeteria, stairs
Classroom conditions, small stairways, gym, auditorium
More stairs, bigger spaced stairs and bigger space hallways – way too crowded the way it is now
The main office lobby needs more space
Hallways aren’t wide enough and neither are staircases
The bathroom – parts are not functional such as the sink; need bigger bathroom. I don’t like the locker
color in the hallway; need more room on stairs.
The bathrooms are dysfunctional and small; where there is a break-time during school there are large
lines in the bathrooms and it is difficult to move around
Changes – lunch system, hallways, weight room, stairs
How little the lunchroom is, it also take a very long time to get food; more and wider stairs
The number order of the classrooms is obnoxiously random
A bigger lunch room

Bugs, bad lighting, small hallways, small cafeteria, worn out paint, lack of space or organization
The halls
Cafeteria
Some classrooms don’t have outside ventilation, crowded stairs, more spaces to chill out the hallways as
they get way too crowded, meaningless hallways
Obviously staircases and benches for the stadium and the actual inside gym
Not enough space in the cafeteria, not having a chance to out and chill
Bigger rooms, more desks, escalators
The cramped stairs, ancient old building from 1953! Holes in the ceiling, worn out paint.
Bathrooms too small, bad heating system, no access to courtyard, venting machine bad, locker rooms and
roofs are old, too tight stairway
The stairwells; window that can’t open, cafeteria set up
Need to look new – stairs are too cramped, a good, spacious courtyard – a bigger weight room
Stairs, locker rooms, gym bleacher size

Tutors being available when needed with all the material provided; better learning environments (bigger
classrooms); wi-fi throughout school; choose students who are brought to the school by grades/behavior
Better flow throughout school (1960’s downstairs, 2000’s upstairs)
Big and more open, band room, more mobile computers
Bigger classroom, presentation room for Lunch & Learn
Open study places to study and bigger media center with more books and more computers; more
windows in media center
Friendlier classrooms, larger media center, study rooms separate from classrooms, almost “built-in”
Promethean boards so there isn’t a hassle with wires but keep whiteboards
Bigger classrooms, new desks, wi-fi, bigger media center
More room in classes, bigger computer labs, wi-fi
More computers – space for students to go with computers while testing is going on
Bigger classrooms, new desks, 4 floors of classrooms, bean bag chairs
Divide classes by departments, have testing rooms and open spaces for studying
Bigger band rooms, bigger classes, keep all of the Promethean boards
bigger classroom, more open space to study, Promethean boards
more computers, new instruments, open space, technology that won’t break down so often, nice gym,
new sports equipment, new lighting, more trash cans and recycling bins that are spaced apart for easy
access, all locker the size of current cheer lockers
Technology that can keep up with our academics; more science technology rooms, more engineering tech
rooms; a large, more inviting library; places that are comfortable to study in
Make classroom spaces relate to the class, rooms express the class descriptions, upgrade rooms, extra
room to do projects
We should have comfortable study rooms, it’d be more motivational; nicer library with more computers,
more comfortable spaces, and a bigger selection of rooms, more windows, water fountains. Make the
hallways wider, more spacious, make the school look more appealing
There should be more windows to allow sunlight; the stairways should be more spacious and not be
surrounded by walls but hand rails; the chorus room should be big and spacious and not be shared with
the music students; hallways should be big enough to not run into six people at the same time; a separate
room for presentations; cafeteria should be big and have windows and access to eat outside next to the
cafeteria
A green space, study spaces/lounges in library (maybe), better cafeteria, more organized/inviting
More windows (natural light), more computer labs, open spaces for students to gather
Improve library – make it more inviting for students to come in and read a book or study, more updated
books; a presentation room – for students to take HSAs or teacher meetings; accessible wi-fi, private
rooms with computer for quiet studying; windows in media center ceiling; bigger lockers
Bigger classrooms, more open space for students to sit and study; improve lighting throughout; bigger
lockers
Bigger lockers, more outside light
Light access, study rooms, courtyards
Bigger classrooms, move computers in classes, wi-fi, more study halls
Bigger bleachers in gym; awnings on football stands; faster computers
More windows in library, classrooms more wide and bigger, and quiet spots in the library
Bigger classrooms, updated classrooms (band, computer labs)
More open study spaces
Mac computer labs, comfortable desk and chairs, home economics room
