DISCUSSIONS AND DECISIONS.
The purpose of the meeting was to review the ideas discussed at the first work session, and present
options for consideration. The following items were discussed:
1. Jim Henderson reviewed the work session activities. Based on the brainstorming exercises, a
statement of the guiding principles for this modernization was presented. It reads:
Potomac Elementary School Modernization Study Guiding Principles
Site is efficiently laid out to promote student safety, and addresses existing circulation
issues.
Building design is aesthetically pleasing, naturally lit, incorporates sustainable design,
encourages collaboration, and can accommodate community use.
Classroom spaces are state of the art, flexible and interactive learning spaces.
2. The existing site constraints were discussed:
a. There is a potential stream valley buffer on the ream valley buffer on the site near the existing
softball backstop. No construction will be allowed within a 100’ radius of that buffer.
b. The existing stand of mature trees on the northeast corner of the site will remain in place.

Currently the site only has one entrance off of River Road. The Feasibility Study will explore
adding a second entrance to improve site circulation. It is not known if a second entrance will be
permitted at this time. The Study will develop options for both one and two entrance scenarios.
3. Five Options were presented to the attendees. Options 1 through 3 replace the existing school
entirely. Options 4 and 5 re-use a significant portion of the building. Future Options will take the
grade level classroom designations off of the plans.
4. Afternoon dismissal is currently from Gym.
5. Option 1 – “L” Shaped Plan
a. Kindergarten away from Main Entrance to school, and close to playgrounds
b. Clustering of Kindergarten classrooms is good.
c.
Multi-Purpose room in location good for community use, but bad for playground access.
Consider moving across hallway next to gymnasium.
d. All exploratory classrooms in one place may cause internal traffic flow problems.
e. The “L” shaped plan allows for only one main corridor to access different parts of the building.
This may be an internal traffic flow concern.
f.
Consider providing access from Multi-Purpose room to playground.
6. Option 2 – Courtyard Option
a. Swap locations of Kindergarten and Second Grade classrooms to move Kindergarten away from
main entrance. Kindergarten Classrooms close to bus loop is preferred.
b. Provide second entrance / exit to courtyard.
c.
Consider traffic and noise along hallway between Multi-Purpose and Music / Art Classrooms.
7. Option 3 – “F” Shaped Plan
a. Front door faces River Road.
b. Gymnasium is in bad location for field access.
c.
The attendees liked that the Media Center as hub for building, across from administration.
d. Consider an open stair at the south corner of the Media Center.
e. Attendees did not like the linear classroom relationships. Prefer clustered classrooms.
f.
Internal travel distance from Art to Kindergarten is too long. Consider connecting classroom
wings.

8. Option 4 – Three Story Existing Option
a. Southeast structure of the building will be re-used. This piece of the building was chosen to be
re-used because it is on two levels that can be connected with accessible ramps. The existing
gym and multi-purpose rooms are smaller than the programmed sizes, and will not be re-used in
this option. The existing media Center will be turned into a courtyard to allow more natural light to
enter the center of the building.
b. Supervision of fields is not good in this option because it requires two sides of the building to be
supervised.
c.
The attendees did not want a three story option if possible. This Option will be dropped from
consideration.
9. Option 5 – Two Story Existing Option
a. This option re-uses that same portion of the existing building as Option 4.
b. This option was preferred over Option 4 because of site supervision and only two stories of
classrooms.
The above information is the writer’s recollection of the discussions and decisions at the meeting. Should
there be any additions or corrections, please notify the writer within two weeks of distribution for
correction.
