The aerial site plan was shown. It was noted that some requirements in the Master Plan include that Old Vic Road be extended to align with the current school entrance and limits curb cuts along Batchellors Forest Road to 2 for both sites since it is considered a “rustic road.” The site plan of Option 2 from the feasibility study was reviewed (3 story building on the park site). Locations of car parking, student drop‐off, bus parking, play fields, tennis and basketball courts, site access, and limitations of the stream buffer were reviewed. The topography of the future park property was reviewed via a contour plan and site cross sections. The neighboring house is set at elevation 523’, the elevation of the school entry level is 510’; lower level is 496’; upper level is 524’. The mass of the building (3 story portion) is set on the South side of the site, away from the neighboring house. The 3 floor plans were reviewed. The second floor is the main entry level. This level contains Administration, cafeteria, kitchen, music, technology education, art, and one of three academic clusters. The upper level contains the media center and one of the academic clusters. The lower level contains the third academic cluster, gymnasium, locker rooms, athletic support spaces, and mechanical room. The lower level is at grade, allowing the ability to walk out on grade at this level. There are 2 stairs at each end of the academic clusters, a main stair in the entry lobby, and a stair at the end of administration connecting to the media center above. Goals and Objectives of the project were reviewed. This includes being mindful of the context in which the building will be designed and constructed. The neighborhood is changing from open fields to sub‐divisions, however there is a rural context to the neighborhood that must be respected. Site/ Sustainability was reviewed and how it can be incorporated into the educational experience. (i.e. opportunities for extending learning outside, connections to the future adjacent park, provide spaces for community gathering as they utilize the athletic fields and other site amenities). Question: Is composting part of the project and will more natural food be used in the future in the food service offerings to students? Answer: Composting is not part of the construction project, though opportunities/ locations where this could be done in the future will be included. Food Service is in charge of what is provided in the cafeteria. Question: Will rainscapes be included? Answer: Opportunities for locations of rainscapes will be provided, though they are not part of the construction project. However, storm water regulations do require green roofs and control of infiltration on the site via ESD (Environmental Site Design). Rainscapes are not the same as ESD, but there is the possibility that some of the ESD locations could be designed as rainscapes. This will be determined as the design progresses. Question: What is the schedule for opening the school?
Answer: The tentative schedule has the school opening in August 2016 with the existing school to be demolished the following year. Question: How will STEM initiative be included?
Answer: Standard science labs will be included with state of the art technology and equipment. The specific curriculum related to the STEM program is coordinated by other staff not by the design and construction team and questions/ concerns should be directed to the Board of Education. Question: Media Center on the 3rd floor not as central, harder for public meetings? Answer: Only up one floor directly up the stairs from the front door. This has been done in other MCPS middle schools. Team can explore moving it to first floor, but the footprint is limited on the site, therefore classroom spaces would need to be moved up to offset the media center moving down, which does not allow separation of grade levels per floor. Comment: Media Center on upper floor could be a good looking glass box lit up on the second floor in front‐ very welcoming. Question: What size lockers will be used‐ need to be large enough to handle all of the student’s items including winter coat? Answer: Locker type as not been determined, but will be based on 2 models, full height locker (typically 12 inches wide) or 2 half height lockers stacked (1 per student, typically 15 – 18 inches wide). Question: Will there be an overhang at the exterior to keep students dry while waiting for a ride. Answer: Yes, there will be a canopy. Typically a portion of canopy is part of the base bid of the project with an extension of the canopy included as an alternate that is constructed if funds are available when the project is built. Question: Will teachers have closets in the classrooms. Answer: No, but storage will be provided via furniture. Question: Will exterior storage for physical education be provided?
Answer: Yes. Question: Will exterior water fountains be provided?
Answer: No, due to vandalism, they are no longer included. Question: Will fields on the existing school property be available to the school? Answer: MCPS will have an agreement that allows use of the fields. The fields shown on the site plan are the existing fields. Question: Will exterior bathrooms be provided for after‐hours use of the play fields? Answer: No, MCPS policy is not to include them. Difficult to manage and provide staff to monitor them. Question: Are kitchens included for community based and LSI classrooms. Answer: Yes. Question: What is required to get the third auxiliary gym?
Answer: It is based on projections, which are too low to justify the need for the additional gym at this time. Question: Is the new development that is coming included in the population projections. Answer: Yes. Currently the school population is at 650 and will slowly reduce to 588. Comment: Only need to skin one field for the school’s use. Prefer the Southeast field to be the one skinned. Will be coordinated to provide the proper site orientation. Comment‐ athletic leagues might still need two. Comment‐ There are a lot of ball fields in this neighborhood. Question: Is there room on this site for a geothermal field?
Answer: Yes, it will be located under the play fields. Comment: Evening activities need some lobby and sign‐in space for parents.
Question: Will the building be ADA accessible. Answer: Building will be completely ADA accessible. All comments/ questions should be sent to the Principal, Ms. Morris and copied to Mr. Marhamati. Comment: Principal likes the ramps, open stairs at Farquhar. Would like ability to easily Page 3 of 4 www.hcm2.com 1‐31 1‐32 1‐33 1‐34 1‐35 supervise stairs/ circulation (no nooks and crannies where students can hide). Question: Will all walls be permanent or will there be operable walls?
Answer: Walls will be permanent. Question: Are 3 AP offices required or could the space be used for a conference room? Answer: Space can be utilized/ furnished as desired, however the size of the room will need to remain as programmed at an AP office size in case it is needed in the future. Question: Latest USGS map doesn’t show stream that far up onto the site as shown on the site plan. Answer: Buffer was established when developer’s NRI FSD was accepted. MNCCPC has established the stream valley buffer as shown on the site plan. The presentation will be posted on both the School website and MCPS website.
