Five meetings will be held in the afternoons and evenings. The upcoming meeting schedule is as follows: Meeting #2: 3‐16‐11 7:00 pm Meeting #3: 4‐6‐11 3:15 pm Meeting #4: 4‐27‐11 7:00pm Meeting #5: 5‐10‐11 7:00pm 2. Meetings are workshops where options will be discussed, evaluated and revised. Options will be combinations of renovations, demolition and additions, and new building options. 3. Once the options are developed and the feasibility study is complete, MCPS staff will examine the constructability of each option with respect to building and site to determine if it would be possible to have students remain on site during the modernization process. If not, per Board of Education recommendation the students will be transported to the holding facility. 4. MCPS will notify the community as well as neighborhood and civic associations of the meetings. Notification will be made in both English and Spanish. 5. A sign advertising meeting dates and time will be posted in front of the school. 6. MCPS recommends posting meeting times on the school website and PTSA list serve. 1‐2 Concerns were expressed about relocating students throughout the duration of construction to a holding school. The main concern expressed was the distance to the Tilden holding school facility. Design options will be explored and evaluated that allow students to remain on campus during construction. The study will identify the pros and cons of keeping students on site vs. relocation for all options explored. FMS principal will set up a separate meeting to discuss these concerns. 1‐3 Next meeting will show conceptual ideas of various renovation, addition, new building options. The Feasibility Study process will examine keeping the existing building first, then partial demolition, then complete replacement and compare pros and cons. MEETING RECORD Action by: Page 2 of 4 1‐4 1‐5 1‐6 1‐7 1‐8 Question‐ Are options of purchasing additional land being looked at? Answer‐ this will be looked at if land is available and approved by BOE. However, this process can become very lengthy and may affect the schedule. Jim Determan of HCM described that the purpose of today’s meeting is to develop a list of goals and objectives. A “Goals Placemat” will be developed from the committee’s list of recommendations and all design options will be evaluated to verify that they meet the goals and objectives set forth by the committee. A member of the committee stated that the community is Arts focused and the new school should incorporate this. Arts should be central since all students take electives and it is an important component of the school. A member of the committee expressed a desire to keep both gyms. This will be evaluated. Typical MCPS Middle Schools have only one gym. The program includes two multi‐purpose rooms that may be able to be adjacent to each other with a moveable curtain/ partition. This will be evaluated with the various options. A list of goals was developed by the Committee: Students to remain on site during construction. Sympathetic design to the neighborhood (rural community) Windows that open. Safe drop off and pick‐up area (separate drop off an pick‐up from busses. Adequate parking. Arts to be central hub. Separating grade levels (especially 6th & 8th grades). Central Science storage. Small school feel (intimate). Traditional (“old school house feel”). Natural light. Safe place in building during storms‐ green zones. Larger cafeteria. Community use of the school is important (i.e. gym, fields, media center, cafeteria). High tech (wired and wireless). School as a teaching tool, science projects that involve the building, “see through walls” to show how the building works. Furniture flexibility to allow small and large group instruction. Flexibility with change in technology. Need a lot of receptacles throughout the room to accommodate the expanding technology (flexibility). Computers are protected from power surges// outages. Ability to darken rooms to allow use of Promethean boards. Temperature control in the classrooms, better temperature comfort. Automatic flush toilets Emergency lights in toilet rooms (will be provided). Faculty restroom in each wing. MEETING RECORD Page 3 of 4 Teachers are territorial‐ need a place that is their “own.” Privatize grade cluster from public space to allow for student privacy. Stage for performances, need better acoustics than in current gym. 1‐9 Traffic concerns were noted. Traffic backs up on Norwood. A traffic study will be performed to determine what modifications will be required. 1‐10 Are there any streams around the site that will limit development? This will be studied. 1‐11 Insufficient parking capacity on event nights and when fields are used at same time as after school activities was noted. Have to bus from Sherwood HS. School parking is designed for day to day requirement not for the infrequent high volume events, however options for temporary parking at these times will be explored as part of the study. 1‐12 This project will be sustainable and a LEED Silver certified project. This is required by the County and by the State. Sustainable strategies the committee noted should be explored as part of the design will include pervious pavement, outdoor gardens (“Michelle Obama Garden”) that parents help maintain, recycling and waste management. 1‐13 Security was discussed. A secure vestibule that requires visitors to enter the main office rather than directly into the building will be provided. Metal detectors are not a need at this time. Security cameras will be provided. Entering and Exiting the school from multiple points at arrival/dismissal time is acceptable. 1‐14 Most students are bussed or dropped off by a parent. Currently there is only one student who walks to school. Less than 50% are dropped off. Busses are in 2 shifts. First shift has the majority of the busses. 1‐15 Special Education spaces need to be large and contain a toilet room. Needs to be close to Main Office and Health Room. School is full inclusion. All classrooms to be ADA accessible. 1‐16 Next Meeting: Meeting #2: 3‐16‐11 7:00 pm These meeting notes were prepared by Hord Coplan Macht, Inc for the purpose of recording the information covered during this meeting.
