SCHEMATIC DESIGN MEETING NO. 7

Meeting Notes:
NEW BUSINESS:
7.1
Grimm + Parker provided a Powerpoint presentation which included precedent images,
revised exterior character sketches and floor plans. The precedent images included
examples of materials and design elements that are similar to those in the proposed design
including: masonry & glass, metal panels, canopies, colonnades, vertical and horizontal
sunshading devices and general massing volumes. The proposed material palette expresses
the nature of the career &technology program and utilizes the building as a teaching tool.
The exterior elevations included revisions to the west façade and NW corner including the
culinary arts/graphics lab areas south to the administration suite. The proposed design of the
NW corner includes an orthogonal floor plan arrangement with an angled roof overhang
supported by columns. This affords an efficient, functional plan arrangement while
maintaining the “wow factor” of the entry façade and public face of the building. The
following comments were expressed:

7.2
The design of the NW corner of the building was discussed.
The roof
overhang/collonade creates a sheltered exterior paved area outside the ground
floor that can be utilized as an outdoor terrace for Café Edison with tables & chairs.
The exterior paving will be revised to align with the profile of the roof projection.
The exterior columns are elliptical in shape to provide a dimensional depth that
provides additional vertical sunshading to help mitigate the western sun exposure.
The windows of the culinary arts and graphics programs @ the NW corner will be
revised to a more horizontal proportion to create a more dynamic look against the
vertical columns.
TEHST asked if two schemes for the NW corner could be included in the SD
submission; one option with the angled corner in the floor plan (similar to previous
scheme) and one option with the orthogonal corner (current scheme). MCPS will
advise if two options may be presented in the SD submission.
TEHST expressed concern over size of the Guidance Suite provided. G+P reviewed revisions
made to the space program and floor plans as a result of the March 15th meeting with the
Guidance Dept. The need was expressed for an additional space of 150;200sf that could
serve as a conference/meeting room and/or an office for a future 3rd counselor. To keep this
additional space adjacent to the current Guidance Suite, the IT Specialist and possibly some
of the Admin Storage space may need to relocate across the hall next to the General
Building storage. MCPS to confirm if this additional room will be added to the building
program.

The future space on the 3rd floor was discussed. This space would accommodate 3 4
additional lab suites (including labs, office, storage) or approximately 7 8 typical classrooms.
The most economical solution would include space that spanned from the 3rd floor corridor
to the east exterior wall, rather than stopping mid span above the automotive labs. The
roof structure of the auto labs will be designed to accommodate the alternate space or a
future addition in this location.
NEXT MEETING:
1.
The PTA/Community Presentation has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 15, 2012 @ 7:00.
THESE NOTES ARE THE OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE MEETING AND REPRESENT THE UNDERSTANDING OF
THE WRITER OF ITEMS DISCUSSED AND DECISIONS MADE DURING THIS MEETING. WE SHALL ASSUME
OUR UNDERSTANDING TO BE CORRECT UNLESS WRITTEN NOTICE TO THE CONTRARY IS BROUGHT TO OUR
ATTENTION WITHIN SEVEN DAYS.
