Meeting Notes:
NEW BUSINESS:
5.1
Prior to the scheduled meeting, a meeting was held with the Edison building services and
guidance staff. The following comments and concerns were expressed:
• The building services staff expressed concern about truck access to the loading
dock. This will be further developed.
• Staff also noted that the elevator needs to be bigger than the standard passenger
elevator. The design team will size the elevator similar to the existing elevator.
• The loading dock shall be 3’ tall.
• Outdoof storage shall move to the lower level and be sized for tractor storage.
• Guidance expressed concern about the size of the waiting room, which is smaller
than they currently have. Ms. Szyfer advised that staff should reserve judgment until
the furniture layout is presented during the design development phase.
• Guidance also expressed that the Career Center should have glass to the corridor,
but should not be a “fishbowl”.
• Car drop-off curb cut on Dalewood Dr shall include a parking space for Culinary Arts
staff to unload supplies. Walkway shall extend from parking area to kitchen.
• Administration / General Office area shall be located off the main entrance
vestibule; visitors will enter the office thru the vestibule for security/control.
5.2
Grimm + Parker provided a Powerpoint presentation which included revisions to the site plan
and a presentation of the revised scheme. A Site option showing a ramp at the back of the
building to the car storage area was included. The building plan revisions consisted of
guidance being relocated near admin, with the staff room and staff offices relocated to the
upper floor. Character sketches of the interior and exterior of the building were presented.
The following comments and concerns were expressed:
• Mr. Hamlin suggested that the Student Council room should be relocated on the
main space. This suggestion was well received and will be incorporated.
• Staff noted that the amount of Network Ops storage appeared excessive. Ms. Szyfer
stated only 650sf of storage is required for Network Ops; the additional 1000sf of
exterior computer storage listed in the site program will be deleted.
• A concern was expressed about the use of metal panels in the elevations. The
concerns were that some metal panels can become “dated” in appearance over
time. The design team noted that metal panels help reflect a high-tech
appearance, and that initial color selection and high-quality finishes to prevent
fading are important to avoid “dated” appearance.
• There was a desire to look at color in the glass on the elevations. Mr. Cross advised

that MCPS does not allow the use of colored glass.
5.3
The site options were discussed. The ramp option reduces the car storage area below
program. There was a good deal of discussion of the need for this ramp. The consensus was
that this was a convenience that was important, but should not be the guiding factor in the
site layout. The following comments were expressed:
• Elimination of the ramp will allow the loading dock to be less congested.
• There was a suggestion to add a freight elevator to allow truck deliveries for the
automotive areas to be done at the loading dock. The design team will investigate
this option. The freight elevator will connect 1st & 2nd floors only.
• The school will provide a list of deliveries to the design team, including
schedule/frequency and the size of trucks that currently come for all types of
deliveries.
• Plaza paving at main entrance will extend across bus loop to parking area. This will
provide a pedestrian crossing and indicate to busses to start queuing to the south.
• An outdoor seating terrace will be investigated for Café Edison/restaurant.
• A screen wall is needed at dumpsters and bus storage area to screen this area from
Randolph Road.
• Bollards need to be provided for safety at all truck access areas.
• The need for the ramp will be discussed among the Edison staff and a determination
will be made.
