THOMAS EDISON HIGH SCHOOL OF TECHNOLOGY MODERNIZATION
SCHEMATIC DESIGN MEETING NO. 4
21202.20/075
ATTENDEES:
See attached sign in sheet.
Meeting Notes:
NEW BUSINESS:
4.1
Grimm + Parker provided a Powerpoint presentation which included a review of the input
from student meeting held the day after the last meeting, a review of the comments made
during the model play at the previous meeting, and a presentation of revised schemes.
Input from the student meetings has been attached to these notes.
4.2
An updated Scheme was presented. This scheme provided administration at the main
entrance of the building. The automotive area is provided at a lower level along the west
side of the building, allowing vision glass from the corridor above down into the space. The
culinary arts classroom and restaurant is provided at the northwest corner of the building.
Cosmetology is provided at the west side of the building adjacent to the bus loop. The
construction trades area remains where it was shown previously, however the lab spaces
have been rearranged based on previous comments. The automotive areas are located to
the west side of the building. The remaining programs are provided on the second floor.
Hospitality has been located adjacent to the stair directly upstairs from Culinary Arts. The
current arrangement allows for some future lab space to be provided. It was
recommended that the shell be built out for these areas to be easily added in the future.
The following comments and concerns were expressed:
• Staff expressed concern about the lack of natural light into the guidance area.
• Staff noted that natural light into the automotive area by way of the roof would be
preferable.
• Staff noted a need for a computer lab for beginning and end of term testing. Ms.
Szyfer advised that the need for a static computer lab may be replaced by WiFi
operated devices by the time the new facility opens.
• Staff expressed concern that the team room was not large enough to house testing
and events that the school has. The current design tries to create informal multipurpose space in the circulation areas to help with some of these items. Ms. Szyfer
advised that team room space size was equal to all other high schools.
• Staff advised a concern about the visibility into the Cosmetology labs from the
outside. A certain amount of privacy is necessary for these spaces. The design team
advised that window coverings (i.e blinds, mecho-shades, etc) would be provided to
aid in this. In addition, the organization of equipment in the space may also create
visual barriers.

•
Staff expressed concern about distraction between the automotive labs and
classroom areas. The design team will work with the automotive department during
the design development phase to determine the proper amount of glazing between
the spaces.
4.3
Three dimensional interior perspectives of the Main Entry, Café Edison, Student Gathering
Space/Showcase, grand stair and 2nd floor commons were presented and were wellreceived by the group. This presentation consistent with design goals/discussions from
previous meetings.
4.4
A suggestion was made to attempt to make the building’s mechanical rooms and systems
transparent and/or exposed to be used as a teaching tool.
4.5
Concern was expressed about the development of the space between Wheaton and
Edison. The design team advised that the site would be developed further as the design
progressed, and a tie between the two schools would be included in the site design.
4.6
Mr. Hamlin noted that Edison would be an appropriate test case for new technology ideas in
education, such as tablets or laptops for every student. The building technology will be
capable for this possibility.
4.7
There was a discussion about “future labs” on top floor. The design team will proceed with
completing building envelope to allow for future labs (exterior walls and roof) as well as
corridor walls to complete egress paths. This will also include sizing of building systems and
providing infrastructure for future interior build-out. Full build-out of these labs would occur
when programs are determined and additional funding is made available.
4.8
Mr Boden requested the vehicle storage area at the lower level be connected by a
ramp/driveway to the 1st floor parking area to the east of the construction trades. This will
allow for access to the auto labs & vehicle storage area from Dalewood Dr, which will
become more critical if buses block access from the bus loop area. It was acknowledged
that this ramp will reduce some of the available vehicle storage area adjacent to the auto
labs.
4.9
Additional comments from stakeholder notecards:
• “Team Room” size: Our current room is used often. If it were larger, it could be used
more
• In case you are having signs made for rooms, what you are calling “Career Center”
is really the “Career/College Center”
• Concern of guidance having natural light
• If we could justify a larger meeting room, what would be needed to make that
happen? Please keep in mind with the design and placement of programs that up
to half of students have an IEP or 504 plan for behavioral + learning disabilities.
Beyond issues with auto, be mindful of distractions.
• Keep in mind TEHST is unique and doesn’t fit all HS spaces, etc.
NEXT MEETING:
1.
The next schematic design meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, March 22, 2012, at
2:30 p.m. at Wheaton High School Media Center.

STUDENT FORUM SUMMARY:
Grimm + Parker held information gathering sessions with students from various classes arranged by Edison HS
staff. A brief overview of the Feasibility Study and design process to-date was given to the class. Students were
then asked to respond to 6 questions to help define the student’s vision for the new Edison HS.
Notes from these sessions are broken down into two categories: First are notes of the live discussion that took
place during the sessions. Second are the written responses from the students collected at the end of each session.

Bigger classrooms
Bigger kitchen
Consistency of classroom sizes (especially kitchen size to be bigger)
Modernize café Edison with patio
Bigger classroom
Hang out space
Bigger kitchen
Drive through
It is hard to get cars in and out of the shop.
Tools are too far away
Higher ceilings
Floors
The tool room is away from the lifts.
More work space in our working environment
Safety rooms
Stairways – way too small
Area of the locker room is too small to change
Needs more space in the classrooms
Need more space for cars and in general just bigger
Less space
Not working much
Sometimes boring
The classrooms and hallways are a little too small and dull.
A place to eat on both levels of the building would help students function better.
Hallways are narrow
Staircases are narrow
Old / traditional looking
The classroom is too small for the teacher to do demonstrations for the students.
Also group activity is impossible within the size
The classrooms and shops have to be more digitalized.
Awkward Parking outside shop
Bathrooms are too small
Auto tech classroom is poorly designed.
A cafeteria
A small wall of fame
The construction area of the school stays dusty and dirty and is usually cleaned only by students
and teachers in the construction field.
Newer equipment to some degree
Bigger tables to fit more student and big projects
There is bad lighting in some work areas.
Classrooms could be a little bigger for all the equipment being used.
The only class that is not in the mall is plumbing; it should be included with the other classes.
No ventilation for fumes; closed space
More work space
Some classrooms need to be bigger even though classroom is a regular size.
Sometimes you get dirty – you have to clean up

A large functional meeting room
TEHS has no curb appeal. If we want kids to apply to TEHS we need to show them how awesome
and fun it is to go to this school from the outside.
The entrance of TEHS is very boring, when I walk in there’s nothing that really impresses me.
TEHS needs a bigger overhang. Buses often come late and there is not enough room for all of
them to fit beneath the overhang.

More supplies
