October 11, 2012 CLARKSBURG / DAMASCUS MIDDLE SCHOOL NO. 2 SCHEMATIC DESIGN MEETING # 1 21243.00/075 ATTENDEES: See attached list. * [] Before an item in bold face indicates a correction to the minutes. Indicates an item which occurred subsequent to the meeting. Minutes: SD1.1 All parties introduced themselves. Mr. Parker stated that the purpose of this meeting was to outline the 2009 Feasibility Study and reaffirm goals and outcomes for the new school design. Mr. Parker stated that the design was to be based on Lakelands Park Middle School, modified to meet the new program requirements and the current site conditions. SD1.2 Mr. Cross noted all meeting were open to the public, who are encouraged to attend. Mr. Cross noted that all comments, concerns or questions should be sent to himself or Nooshin Amirpour, and not directly to the Architect. SD1.3 A presentation was given by the Architect. A copy is attached to these minutes. The presentation included a short description of experience of Grimm + Parker, a review of important features to be included in school design, a review of the results of the feasibility study, and a discussion of future direction for this project. SD1.4 A one6way traffic pattern for parking and student drop off areas was recommended by participants. Several participant expressed concern about congestion entering and leaving the site. It was noted that vehicle stacking for student pick up should be maximized. SD1.5 A short review of programmatic changes from Lakelands Park Middle School was discussed. These changes include larger science labs, including 2 additional science labs, 3 additional team rooms, additional office spaces, an increase weight lifting room, and modification to the tech ed. lab. The home ec. Lab was eliminated. A special education Bridge program is also included in the ed. spec. SD1.6 Mr. Cross noted that all minutes and presentations will be available on an MCPS website for community access. A link to the website will be provided at the next meeting. SD1.7 The Architect posed the following question: What is important to make this project a success from your point of view? The following is a summary of the responses. • If the community feels involved in the design process. • More light in the central core area than Rocky Hill. • Corridor access to the cafeteria is congested during the day – maybe add corridor cross access on the 2nd level in front of the Media Center. • Simplified site entrance. • Special Ed bridge suite should be designed into the school. Hoover should be used as an example. • Site facility should be useable by the entire community after hours. • Site should be accessible from community sides for walking to school. • Maximize classroom space and the size of classrooms. The following is a summary of the responses. • Future addition should not look like an afterthought. • Future addition should be built now. • Architecture should blend into the community, much like Lakelands Park Middle School. NEXT MEETING: 1. The next schematic design workshop meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, November 1, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Rocky Hill Middle School. THESE MINUTES ARE THE OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE MEETING AND REPRESENT THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE WRITER OF ITEMS DISCUSSED AND DECISIONS MADE DURING THIS MEETING.
