MPS Weekly Update
11 February 2016
www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/internal/staff/mps_weekly_update
A not unfamiliar face in the MPS weekly update, MPhys
Theoretical Physics student Daniel Hajas who, having
won second place in the JRA poster competition in
October 2015, last week showcased his work in
parliament at the Posters in Parliament exhibition.
Daniel aimed to highlight the challenges he and other
visually impaired people face in learning science and
maths, with work specifically looking at enhancing the
accessibility of STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths) education for visually impaired
students using focused information mapping and a
cross-modality platform.

MPS Outreach
Every year, MPS runs about 130+ outreach events for 12,000+ people
(mainly school children), as well as receiving requests for activities on a daily
basis from schools, colleges and for general public events – for example
Brighton Science Festival, Nerd Nite, PubhD.
All our outreach events are listed online at
www.sussex.ac.uk/maths/outreach/talks
www.sussex.ac.uk/physics/outreach/talks
Please contact Dr Darren Baskill if
a) you have done any recent outreach, so that he can add it to our database
b) you want to get involved (especially if you haven’t done any outreach
before)
c) you already have a prepared talk suitable for schools or the public
Thank you to all the MPS folk who
came along to support Chrystelle,
Dorothy, Kathy and Naomi at the
first-ever Staff Craft Fair, held on
Monday 8 February.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science UK &
Ireland Fellowships Programme 2016 is now open
for applications. They will be awarding five
outstanding female postdoctoral scientists a fellowship
of £15,000.
The fellowships are open to female postdoctoral
researchers working in the fields of life and physical
sciences, mathematics, computer sciences and
engineering.
This unique award is designed to provide practical
help to aid female postdoctoral researchers in
