National Student Survey (NSS)
The NSS is a survey of all final-year
students in the UK about the quality of
their academic experience.
The survey provides students with an opportunity to make their opinions on
their higher education student experience count at a national level. The
results help prospective students make informed choices of where and what
to study and enable the participating institutions to identify and improve in
areas where they may have not fared so well for their students.

MPS will be holding a pizza event for our NSS
final year students on Thursday 10 March
12.15pm-1.30pm in the Creativity Zone.
On Friday 11 March, the School will hold its
second research hack day. This follows the
successful first hack day where
undergraduates and PhD students worked
on challenges in bioinformatics and
visualizing astronomical datasets.

Mathematics in Action study day
U3A members £10/others £12
Dr Roger Luther will be hosting a study day course
looking at several areas of life in which mathematics
plays an interesting role. These will include home décor
– for example, a simple mathematical analysis shows
that there are just 11 different regular tiling patterns -–
traffic behaviour and elections. This course is run in
conjunction with the U3A and S.U.N. registered charity.

Travelling abroad?
A reminder that if you are travelling abroad on
business, you will need to complete a travel
insurance document and an overseas risk
assessment form to be submitted at least TEN
working days before your trip . Both can be found at
our staff resources pages under ‘Useful Forms’
www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/internal/staff
Please note in the ‘overseas risk assessment’ form
that, under ‘contact information’ where it states main
address and telephone number; this refers to your
destination address, NOT your home address.
Please submit these forms to the School Office – there
is a folder in the bottom tray immediately to your right
on entering the office – one for signatures for Claudia
Eberlein and one for Enrico Scalas.
A BIG thank you to all who indulged
themselves at last week’s Maths
Society cake bake. They raised over
£100 towards the Maths Ball.
As the editor sees it, it’s a win-win situation.
