Progress, fun and learning at 2nd Research Hack Day
Last Friday 11 March saw hackers from MPS spend a whole day focussed
on cutting code and figuring out algorithms to solve challenges posed by
Dr Stephen Wilkins of Astronomy and Prof Tony Carr of the Genome
Damage and Stability Centre.
Jacob Maresca (2nd year MPhys), Luke Arpino (PhD TPP) and Tim Yang
(RF Maths) produced methods to analyse and visualise on the web, cosmic
variance data from large-scale universe simulations.
Meanwhile Daniel Cutting (4th year MPhys), Eduard Campillo-Funollet (PhD
Maths) and Phil Rooney (RF Astronomy) worked on methods and
produced code to analyse DNA replication data.
The current scores on the NSS doors are:
Mathematics 58.54% Physics & Astronomy 55.68%

What is the impact of digital technology on
work-life balance?
Produced as part of the Digital Brain Switch
project, a collaboration between experts in computer
and social sciences from several UK universities, the
two videos propose that workers regularly disconnect
from technology in order to maintain a healthy
work-life balance and that both employers and
employees set and respect realistic boundaries
around the need to go offline.
