Institute of Physics annual conference on High-Energy and
Astro Particle Physics 21-23 March 2016
Before the Easter break, the EPP group was busy with the IoP’s annual
conference on High-Energy and Astro Particle Physics. They were hosting
210 physicists, including many early-career researchers and PhD students,
as well as prominent physicists and astronomers from the UK and
overseas. The conference consisted of eleven plenary and 86 parallel
sessions and twenty posters were presented.
This is a particularly exciting year to be working in the HEPP and APP areas:
we were able to celebrate the neutrino Nobel and breakthrough prizes, the
discovery of gravitational waves and the continued success of the LHC. We
were proud to be hosting the conference at this important time and, as a
University, to be making crucial contributions to fundamental experiments that
could help change the landscape of known physics.

Mathematics news
The Nerd Nite: Maths Special
on March 17 was a great
success. It was hosted by our
own Dr Mick Taylor at
Otherplace, Basement,
Brighton.
The talks by Prof Enrico
Scalas (above),
Dr Konstantinos Blyuss (left)
and Dr Yuliya Kyrychko (below)
captivated the audience with
metronomes, oscillating
bridges, deadly viruses and the
chances of winning in tv shows
and in the lottery.
If you missed it, don't
worry. Plenty more
maths talks are now
being planned for the
near future.
