MPS Weekly Update 31 March 2016 www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/internal/staff/mps_weekly_update Institute of Physics annual conference on High-Energy and Astro Particle Physics 21-23 March 2016 Before the Easter break, the EPP group was busy with the IoP’s annual conference on High-Energy and Astro Particle Physics. They were hosting 210 physicists, including many early-career researchers and PhD students, as well as prominent physicists and astronomers from the UK and overseas. The conference consisted of eleven plenary and 86 parallel sessions and twenty posters were presented. This is a particularly exciting year to be working in the HEPP and APP areas: we were able to celebrate the neutrino Nobel and breakthrough prizes, the discovery of gravitational waves and the continued success of the LHC. We were proud to be hosting the conference at this important time and, as a University, to be making crucial contributions to fundamental experiments that could help change the landscape of known physics. SAVE THE DATE Wednesday 18 May 10am-4pm Conference Centre, Bramber House MPS away day Featuring a morning session on ‘Unconscious bias’, a short School meeting (NB This replaces the school meeting originally booked for the afternoon of 18 May) and an afternoon workshop on bullying and harassment www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/ internal/staff/awayday The deadline for registration is 09.00hrs 12 May A warm MPS welcome to a new member of the School Office staff, Andy Robinson. Prof Kai Zuber from Dresden University (previously at Sussex) presenting the successes in neutrino physics Andy is the new MSc coordinator. He joins us from the University of Brighton where he has been working in a similar role. [email protected] Well-deserved congratulations to Sinead Rance, Research Support Team clerical assistant. Sinead has been appointed Project Manager to the EU ModCompShock project under the auspices of Prof Charalambos (Babis) Makridakis . Lunchtime at the conference She will remain working in the School Office part-time in the interim. It was hosted by our own Dr Mick Taylor at Otherplace, Basement, Brighton. The talks by Prof Enrico Scalas (above), Dr Konstantinos Blyuss (left) and Dr Yuliya Kyrychko (below) captivated the audience with metronomes, oscillating bridges, deadly viruses and the chances of winning in tv shows and in the lottery. If you missed it, don't worry. Plenty more maths talks are now being planned for the near future.
