MPS Weekly Update
7 April 2016
www.sussex.ac.uk/mps/internal/staff/mps_weekly_update
CONGRATULATIONS to
Dr Bertram Dűring who has
been promoted to Reader in
Mathematics
(with effect from 1/4/16)
The primary purpose of these events is to give you new insights into the
world-leading research being undertaken by your colleagues across the
School. These are intended to be both intellectually stimulating and
accessible to an academic audience from across this School and occasionally
other specifically relevant School(s). It is hoped that some colloquia may
foster new intra- or inter-disciplinary collaboration within the School, helping
us to build on our shared strengths to achieve even greater things. They will
also be a celebration of the research achievements within the School.
Suggestions for future Research Colloquia should be made to

Mick is a mathematics lecturer
here at Sussex and is also one of
the co-founders of Goodmoney, a
Brighton-based social enterprise
working to provide alternatives to
the current financial system.
We will explore the nature of
modern money, how it is created
and destroyed, who creates it and
for what purpose and how money
impacts on things such as housing
bubbles. We will also look at
alternatives and how we could
re-design money better to serve
today’s needs.
The talk will be followed by
refreshments.
The event is open to all.
For further information regarding
the talk, please contact Megan
Peacock at [email protected].

This is a great opportunity to raise your profile and
receive attention and support for your research and
impact projects.
Impact awards will be made in several categories,
including public engagement and economic impact.
Emerging researcher awards are eligible if you are
within seven years of your doctoral award and have
outstanding achievements for your career stage.
Dr John Haigh’s book ‘Mathematics in Everyday
Life’ is now published by Springer. It is based on the
module of the same title taken by most first year
maths majors.
Congratulations to Erin Pichanick (Associate Tutor)
who recently successfully passed his viva.
The deadline for applications is Monday May 2nd and
full details are given at http://ht.ly/10jmVF
We had only one application from the whole school last
year (well done to Omar Lakkis). Let's do a lot better
than that this year. Good luck and don't hesitate to ask
a colleague for help or encourage them to apply.
Dr Luc Berthouze is a member of faculty in the school of Engineering and Informatics. In just
under two weeks, he will be running the Brighton marathon (his first marathon!) in order to raise
money for a cause which is quite important to him, and also to MPS: the under-representation of
postgraduate female students in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics). There is some material in the following article, produced by DARO, which explains why
this matters www.sussex.ac.uk/alumni/newsandfeatures/news?id=34122.
To donate, please visit his JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/1stGenFemaleSTEMScholarship.
Contributions go directly to the Sussex Fund.
With the support of the University, Luc aims to raise money to create a scholarship for a promising (to be identified by
the University) first-generation female scholar to undertake an MSc in a STEM subject. The University will match any
donation that Luc receives.
