The Blue Hose finished with a 5-26 record last season, but are expected to be vastly improved from last season with the return of three redshirt players, which includes Big South Preseason team member Al’Lonzo Coleman. Thursday’s contest marks the eighth meeting between the two squads, with Liberty holding a 4-3 edge in the series. Tipoff inside the Vines Center is slated for 9 p.m. Recent Results Playing in its first of two games inside the South Padre Convention Centre, the Liberty men’s basketball team squared off with Mississippi Valley State. Thanks to solid threepoint shooting in the first half, the Flames created a 10-point bulge at halftime and did not let up in the second half, en route to a 64-58 decision, Friday afternoon. Liberty picked up its second straight win on Saturday, wrapping up the South Padre Island Invitational with a 67-65 overtime victory over Chicago State. The extra period allowed the Flames to take home some hardware, as they were crowned champions of the tournament’s Laguna Madre Division. With the victory, Liberty improved to 4-4 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 3-4. Watch and Listen to the Flames Thursday’s contest will be televised on MASN with Ray Jones providing the play-byplay and Tim Scarborough adding color commentary. There will be a radio broadcast will air on the Flames Sports Network (flagship WRVL 88.3 FM) with Alan York providing the play-by-play. York takes over play-by-play duties this season for longtime broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who retired this past spring after 29 years. Layer returned to Liberty Mountain in 2009 after previously serving as an assistant coach for the Flames during the 2007-08 season. This is Layer’s third head coaching stint and first since leaving Colorado State in 2007. Layer, 51, comes to Liberty most recently from a successful run as an assistant coach at BIG EAST member and nationally ranked Marquette in 2008-09 where he worked with the guards. Layer helped the Eagles to a 25-10 record and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament despite lacking the full-time services of All-American Dominic James, who injured himself near the end of the season. Dale Layer first served as an assistant at Liberty during the 2007-08 season, helping the Flames to its best regular season finish since Liberty won the 2004 Big South Championship. Layer has also demonstrated the ability to develop talent, including former Colorado State center Jason Smith. The seven-footer scored over 1,500 points for Layer’s Rams during his three seasons with the program before entering the NBA Draft following his junior campaign. Due to his development under Layer’s tutelage, Smith was chosen with the 20th selection of the NBA Draft’s first round by the Miami Heat in 2007. His rights were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. When Smith graduated high school he was ranked as the 276th best player in his class and under Layer developed in three seasons to the 20th selection in the NBA Draft. Several of Layer’s recruiting classes at Colorado State were ranked among the top 40 nationally by various recruiting publications. Layer has a career 289-213 record (18th year) as a head coach, including nine seasons at the helm of Queens University (formally Queens College) in Charlotte, N.C. He also served as the athletics director while at the school and started the basketball program in 1989 from scratch at the formerly all women’s institution. Layer’s student-athletes excel in the classroom too. In Layer’s 17 seasons as a head coach, he has accompanied 45 seniors to be honored on senior night and all 43 earned a college degree, marking 100 percent graduation rate of all players who finish their eligibility under Layer. After graduating from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1980, Layer started his coaching career as an assistant under Jim Harley, his former coach. Before moving on to Queens University, Layer spent seven of the next eight years at Eckerd College except for the 1982-83 season, when he was an assistant at Eastern Kentucky. Layer made the jump to Division I in 1998 when Ritchie McKay took the head coaching job at Colorado State and named him to his staff. During McKay’s two seasons with the Rams, Layer helped lead Colorado State to the NIT Tournament in 1999, where they beat Mississippi State and Colorado before falling to eventual champion, California. While with the Rams, Layer had a 103-106 record, including a 17-13 mark in 2007. In 2003, Layer led Colorado State to the Mountain West Conference Championship and its first NCAA Tournament bid in 13 years, falling to Duke in the first round. Top 50 Scorers in Liberty History 1. Coleman also chipped in eight rebounds. After going 5-26 last season, Presbyterian returns three redshirt juniors to the roster in Coleman, Miller and Josh Johnson. Coleman, a member of the Big South Preseason team, leads the Blue Hose in points and rebounds this season, averaging 14.5 tallies and 7.7 boards per game. Liberty-Presbyterian College Series Liberty currently holds a 4-3 edge over the Blue Hose in the budding Big South series. Liberty in Big South Openers Liberty is looking to overcome a historically slow start to its conference season in its league opener against the Blue Hose. Since joining the Big South during the 1991-92 season, Liberty is just 5-14 when kicking off its conference schedule. Last season, Liberty snapped a three-game losing skid in conference openers, defeating Charleston Southern on Dec. 3 inside the Vines Center, 69-53. Free Throw Comparison After finishing the season first and second in the Big South in free throw percentage last season, shooting 70.0 and 69.6 percent, respectively, Liberty and Presbyterian College’s numbers have dropped at the line, in 2010. Liberty is currently fifth (69.1) in the conference in free throw percentage, while PC is eighth (66.2). Averaging 3.1 points per game in 2009-10, Minaya is Liberty’s second leading scorer along with John Brown, averaging 11.6 points per contest this season. Chairman of the Boards Redshirt junior transfer John Brown is first in the conference in rebounds, with 87 rebounds (10. 9 rpg). The Savannah, Ga., native holds a 20 board edge over VMI’s Stan Okoye who has 67 on the season. Brown has posted double digit totals in rebounds in four games this season. In his Liberty debut, Brown grabbed 17 rebounds, becoming the first Flame to do so in nearly two years. The guard also collected 12 rebounds at Notre Dame (Nov. 14) and 14 at Texas Tech (Nov. 21). Chasing Dad After scoring 13 points in Liberty’s contest against Chicago State on Saturday, Evan Gordon is approaching 500 career points (482). The sophomore’s father, Eric Gordon, Sr., holds a place in the Liberty record books as a member of the 1,000-point club with 1,154 career points. The elder Gordon is 16th all-time on Liberty’s scoring list. Rebounding Machine In his Liberty debut against Virginia Intermont on Nov. 12, redshirt junior John Brown finished with a double-double, posting 18 points and 17 rebounds. The last time a Flame grabbed that many boards was during the 2008-09 season, when Anthony Smith finished with 17 in a 91-80 win at VMI on Jan. 17, 2009. The most rebounds garnered by a Flame in a single game last season was 15 (Jesse Sanders, vs. VMI, Jan. 28, 2010). Milestone Man Jesse Sanders finished with 10 points and seven assists in Liberty’s 82-49 win over Southern Virginia on Nov.18, allowing him to surpass 500 points and 426 rebounds in his collegiate career. The junior point guard now has 530 career points (47th all-time at Liberty) and 405 boards. With his five assists on Nov. 14 against Notre Dame, Sanders also surpassed the 300 assist mark. The Sugar Land Texas native now has 338 career assists. Flames in November Liberty finished the month of November with a 4-4 record this season, giving the Flames an 80-78 all-time record in the 11th month. The Flames’ best November record occurred during its NAIA days. During the 1982-83 season, second-year head coach Jeff Meyer led the Flames to 4-0 record during the month. Liberty-Nigeria Connection Sommy Ogukwe, a 6-7 freshman forward from Abuja, Nigeria, is not the first Liberty player born in the African nation. In fact, two of the four players whose jerseys are retired at Liberty are Nigerian natives – Peter Aluma and Julius Nwosu. Nwosu, who played three seasons for the Flames (1991-1993), is a member of Liberty’s 1,000-point club, finishing his collegiate career with 1,248 points (14th all-time). Nwosu is also second on Liberty’s all-time list in blocks with 112. The center was the first Liberty player to ever play in the NBA, suiting up for three different teams – the San Antonio Spurs (1995), the Boston Celtics (1997) and the Utah Jazz (2000). Nwosu is a native of Imo, Nigeria, which is approximately 372 miles from Ogukwe’s hometown of Abuja. Aluma, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Liberty is seventh on Liberty’s all-time scoring list with 1,715 career points. The former center holds the record for most blocks in a career by a Liberty payer with 366. In his freshman season with the Flames, he helped Liberty win its first Big South Championship and advance to its first ever NCAA Tournament in 1994. In 2008, he became the second Liberty athlete to be inducted into the Big South Hall of Fame. Aluma is a native of Lagos, Nigeria, which is approximately 466 miles from Abuja. Double-Double Dude In Saturday’s 67- 65 overtime win over Chicago State, John Brown finished the contest with 16 points and 15 rebounds, securing his fourth double-double of the season. With four double-doubles in eight contests, the redshirt junior has already had more doubledoubles than any Flame from last season’s squad. The Flames experienced their second overtime of the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday, as they defeated Chicago State 67-65 in extra minutes. Approaching the Mark Evan Gordon could achieve a milestone this weekend. With 482 career points, the sophomore guard needs just 18 tallies to reach the 500-point mark. With his career point total, Gordon is now 50th on Liberty’s all-time scoring list. Heated Half In Liberty’s game against Chicago State this past Saturday, the Flames experienced their best single-half shooting performance of the season. During the first half of the contest, Liberty shot 57.7 percent from the field, hitting 15-of-26 shots. Points Chase Two current Liberty Flames are on Liberty’s Top 50 scorers list – Jesse Sanders and Evan Gordon. Sanders currently sits in 47th with 530 points, while Gordon is steadily gaining ground in the 50th spot with 482. Gordon recently cracked the Top 50, finishing with 13 points in Liberty’s 67-65 overtime win against Chicago State, this past Saturday. Liberty is averaging 42.1 boards per game while holding opponents to 35 per contest for a margin of + 7.6. The Flames have outrebounded five of their eight opponents this season. The most the Flames have been outrebounded by this season is nine, which occurred on Nov. 23 at USF. Single-game Lows Forty three is the fewest points posted by Liberty in a game this season (at USF, Nov. 23), however, the mark still fell short of making the Liberty record books. On Feb. 12, 1981, Liberty scored just 30 points against East Tennessee State. The Buccaneers took the contest, 53-30. Fewest Points Scored 30 – East Tennessee State, 2/12/81 38 – College of Charleston, 1/26/91 39 – Clemson, 11/17/09 40 – Winthrop, 1/13/07 40 – Randolph Macon, 2/8/84 41 – Old Dominion, 11/19/09 The Brothers Sanders After suiting up for the Flames for two seasons, starting point guard Jesse Sanders is joined this season by his younger brother, John Caleb. The brothers reunite after playing two seasons together with the HCYA Warriors (2006-07, 2007-08). Jesse, who averaged 8.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game last season and became the first player in Big South and school history to garner two career tripledoubles when he posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian on Dec. 12. Sanders’ first three-category performance occurred during his freshman season against Presbyterian College. Much like Liberty’s floor general, John Caleb has spent his high school career in the Homeschool Christian Youth Association (HCYA), matching up with the top 5A and prep schools in the Houston area. During his junior year, he was named to the All Greater Houston third team, averaging 28 points per game, 8.9 rebounds per game and 4.7 assists per game. John Caleb helped the Warriors win three national homeschool championships, including one with his older brother. * - Big South Conference Game The Only One with Two Threes Liberty concluded the 2009-10 campaign as the only Division I school in the country to have two players record a triple-double during the year. The first three category feat for the Flames occurred on Dec. 12, as Jesse Sanders posted 11 points, 10 boards and 10 assists against Kentucky Christian. In his final season as a Flame, Kyle Ohman also notched a triple-double, putting up 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in a 110-102 victory over VMI on Jan. 2. Liberty’s 2010-11 Record ... On July 6, Liberty Athletics hired former ISP broadcaster Alan York as its new radio play-by-play broadcaster for its football and men’s basketball programs. York will be replacing Liberty’s legendary play-by-play broadcaster Jerry Edwards, who held the position of “Voice of the Flames” for 29 years before retiring from broadcasting last spring. York will be the fifth person to hold down the position as the Flames’ play-by-play broadcaster for men’s basketball. For the past 12 years, York has been an assistant production manager for ISP, America’s Home for College Sports on the radio for the last two decades. While at ISP, York was based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and was the lead broadcaster for the ACC National Game of the Week in football. He has also gained experience broadcasting various Wake Forest’s men’s and women’s basketball and baseball programs. Home Court Advantage? The Flames are looking to improve its record at home this season, after finishing 8-6 (.571) inside the Vines Center last season. The winning percentage was the lowest since the 2005-2006 season, when the Flames went 6-7 (.462) at home. Liberty’s lowest winning percentage inside the Vines Center occurred during the 1990-91 season, when the Flames went 3-8 (.375) during home games. The following season, Liberty turned things around, finishing the season 14-1 at home and claiming the best winning percentage in the Vines Center (.933). 2010-11 Big South Preseason Poll Team (First-Place Votes) Total Points 1) Coastal Carolina (10) 206 2) Winthrop (5) 191 3) UNC Asheville (4) 181 4) Presbyterian (4) 159 5) High Point 139 6) Liberty (1) 124 7) Charleston Southern 115 8) VMI 85 9) Radford 83 10) Gardner-Webb 32 No Rest in November For the second straight year, Liberty once again had a busy November. This season, the Flames played eight games over a 16-day span during the month of November, tying the record for the most contests during the month. Last season, the Flames played an eight-game slate during the 11th month, finishing with a 3-5 record. Prior to the 2009-10 campaign, the last season in which Liberty played eight November games was in 1979 during the program’s NAIA days. The team was coached by Dale Gibson and finished with a 4-4 November record (28-11 on the season). Streak Snapped Liberty’s overtime game with UNC Wilmington on Nov. 16 ended a 44-game streak without an overtime. Prior to the contest, the last time Liberty had gone to an extra period was on Feb. 4, 2009, when the Flames were edged on the road by GardnerWebb, 95-90. All-American Transfer One new face expected to bring instant experience to the Flames’ roster is redshirt junior guard John Brown. A junior college transfer from Roane State, Brown averaged a double-double for the Raiders last season, posting 16.7 points while grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. The 6-5 Savannah, Ga., native was rewarded for his efforts last season, earning National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America second team honors. Before his time at Roane State, Brown suited up for The Citadel, receiving a spot on the 2008-09 SoCon All-Freshman Team.
