About the Sixth Grade Welcome 6th Graders and Parents of 6th Graders General Information Below you will find several general points of information. Your familiarity with these will make the 6th Grade year begin and progress more smoothly and predictably. Specials Dismissal Absences (excused and unexcused) and Late Work When a student is absent, the office MUST receive a note explaining the reason for the absence within THREE days. The state requires this documentation. Regardless of whether the absence is excused or unexcused, the student should check School Notes for classwork and homework. School Notes can be found on the 6th Grade webpage. This should simplify learning about classroom proceedings and assigned homework, rather than having to request this information from teachers. Upon returning to school, the student should see each of his/her teachers before the school day begins so that he/she can start making up the missed work at that time. Classwork and homework are due within two school days per day of absence. Graded Work Every few weeks, teachers will send home graded papers for parent perusal and signature on the cover sheet. These graded papers and the signed cover sheet should be returned the following day. If you have a question, please let us know, and we will get back in touch with you. Any student found to be cheating or talking without permission during any quiz or test may automatically receive a grade of zero (0). Students who do not hand in their assignments when due may receive deductions in points. Teachers will coordinate tests and due dates to ensure that students will not have too many assignments on any given date. Tardies Students arriving after 7:50 a.m. will be considered tardy and must be signed in by a parent. Digital Devices Students are under the same guidelines with personal digital devices as they are when using computers and other digital devices at school. The Technology Usage Policy that all students and parents sign each year applies to, but is not limited to, all digital devices, storage devices/media, and digital content. Students are subject to disciplinary action for misuse of personal devices. Students are expected to use digital devices only for reading and academic purposes. All cell phones must remain in lockers during the school day. In-school Projects Throughout the school year we will be doing projects that will take several weeks to complete. Because most of the work will be done here at school, you will not see it “in progress.” You will be informed as to the content, due date, and point value of the project. Communication Various notes, flyers, and packets will be handed to students to be placed in the sixth graders’ Take Home folders. To conserve paper, some of these are distributed only to “youngest in family” at Cherokee Bend. Students and parents are encouraged to check School Notes for classwork and homework as needed. Smoke Signals is also available on-line. We sincerely care about our students and want all of them to succeed to the best of their abilities. In turn, we expect them to take their learning seriously and always do their best.
