ROLL CALL
The Faculty Counci met in special session at 4:00 p.m. President
Strand presided, a d the follmring members were present: Bett,
Bogart, Carlin, Ca lson, Charley, Colby, Dietz, Foreman, Frazier,
Friday, Gleeson, G ode, Hansen, Heston, Hovland, Knapp, Langton,
Lemon, Li, Maser, IcCulloch, Miller, Milligan, Norton, Ordeman,
Orner, Pfanner, Pr'ce, Richardson, Scholl, Schultz, Smith (for
Scheel), Sisson, S rand, Tripp (for Nicodemus), Wiggenhorn.
Also present were: Professors Margaret L. Fincke, J. H. Kultgen,
J. W. Sherburne.

OF FACULTY
Dr. Hovland presen ed a report of the study he and Dr. Sherburne
bad conducted on tre pbilosophies of educat i.onheld by members
of the faculty of regan S~ate College. Copies of summaries of
the findings and 0 the Cluestionnaire used in the survey were
distributed. Dr. ovland spoke of the ge<.eral categories used and
presented the gene al and specific obaer'vat.Lone , Dr. Sherburne
reported that the indings witl'linschools had been supplied
earlier to school aculties.

President strand. e ressed appreciation of tbe work of tbe committee and invited discussion and action by tbe Faculty Council.
A motion was made nd seconqed that the committee be continued
and that it try a epetition of tbe questionnaire study to see
wbetber results wo ld be the same or different. Dean Gleeson
expressed. a belief that the study had been stimulating to faculty
members. Dean Pri e asked whether panel discussions of some of
the aspects of edu at:Lonal philosophy would not be useful. Professor Bett asked hether the committee had thoughts regarding
further activity. Dr. Hovland replied that probably pronounced
"realists, It It ideal ,sts,It and "pragmat.tst.s"might be used on
panels to stimulat thinking and discussion. Professor Carlin
suggested an examp e of a statement that might be the topic of
panel discussion. On the matter of repetition of a questionnaire
survey, question 'Ii s rat sed whether faculty members would be
receptive to an ea ly repetition. Dr. Schultz expressed preference for panel dis ussions as follow up of the survey that had
been completed. D. Hovland stressed the value of interchange
of ideas and cited success during the current year of an evening
seminar group of f culty members on philosophy and science.
Dr. McCulloch aske whether a discussion of pbilosophies of education might not b aprropriate in connection with fall Faculty
Day. Dr. Bogart PGlinted out some ambiguities in the questionnaire which discussions might help re so'Lve , At this point the
motion. under diS<:!ussionwas put to vote and was declared lost.

It was then moved nd seconded that t.he re~ort of Dr. Hovland
and Dr. Sherburne e accepted, that the committee be continued,
and that it be ask d, in planning further activities, to take
into account the pints and suggestions raised in the discussion
of the previous mo ion. It was stipulated that the motion, in
continuing the com ittee, would. mean that the personnel of the
committee might be enlarged. or changed., Dean Maser asked whether
faculty groups uer not rerhaps being asked. to handle committee
'recommendations on matters of major importance too rapidly in
view of the limite time faculty merr.bershave for discussion
sessions. Dr. Hov and said he believed that further participation in the philos phy of education area should be optional
with any faculty g oup , It was mentioned that what a faculty
memcer "believes" s revealed in the recent questionnaire stUdy
is not necessarily what he does. 'I'he motion to continue the committee on the plan specified was then put to vote. The motion
was carried.
President Strand s id that advice and. suggestions of deans of
schools would be w lcomed regarding the continued activity of
the committee and..ts personnel. Dean Pr Lee said he thought
serious considerat· on should be given to Dean McCulloch's suggestion regarding ttenticn to philosophy of education as a
topic in connectio '(-lith
