TEACHER
EDUCATION
President Strand sp ke of the challenge to Oregon State College
in the recent alloc tion of e Lement.ary teacher education as a
major function of t e institution.
He called on Dean Zeran to
report on the plans under way for inaugurating the new program.
Dean Zeran reviewed the preliminary thinking and recommendations
of various institut onal and Lnt.er-Lne
td. tutional committees.
He
distributed a three page mimeographed summary of a tentative
curriculum that
being worked out by comrnittees of Oregon
State College.
tentative pr-ogram provided for institutional
reauirements in hyg ene and physical education and {for men} in
basic -def'ense educa ion. It provided for 98 to 119 term hours
of renuired work in general education, 36 hours in professional
courses, at least 9 term hours of additional general education
(3 hours in each of three fields chosen from a list of eight
fields), and 9 term hours of additional professional work (3
hours in each of t ~ee fields chosen from a list of eight).
11en would have from 6 to 28 hours of free elective work and
women from 12 to 34 hours. Dean Zeran called on lir. Godard to
describe a course i Arithmetic and Science proposed as part of
a group of professi nal courses in The Child and the Curriculum.
He then asked Dr. P rks to tell of a suggested orientation course
designed to interpr t and arouse interest in teaching as a profession. Questions, c mments-, and suggestions were then invited.
Dean Zeran answered some (1uestions that were raised and called
on others to discus others. On motion the council then voted
to continue the dis ussion of the new program at a meeting to
be called for 4:-00 I 'clock on Wednesday, January 20. Dean Zeran
suggested that nues~ions on any aspeets of the program be turned
in to him in advanc of the meeting.
