Campbell FIGHTING CAMELS
(8-7, 2-3 Big South)
Lynchburg, Va. - Vines Center - 2 p.m.
Matchup Notes
- Campbell has not beaten Liberty on the Flames’ home turf since the very first meeting
on Jan. 5, 1976, when the Camels defeated Liberty, 85-78. At the time, Liberty played its
home games at Jefferson Forest High School in Forest, Va. The Flames moved into the
Schilling Center nearly four years later, hosting games in the facility for the next 11 years
until the construction and completion of the Vines Center.
- Lovell Cabbil moved up six spots in the conference rankings with his career-high fivesteal performance at Coastal Carolina. The freshman guard is now fourth in the league
in thefts, averaging 1.7 per game. In addition, Cabbil is also second on the team in total
points (174), assists (47) and blocks (6).
- Caleb Homesley has turned up the intensity in the Flames’ last three contests, pacing
Liberty in points (12.0 ppg) and rebounds (6.7 rpg) during the span. Homesley’s string of
solid performances includes a career-high 18 points at Notre Dame and a career-high 10
boards versus UNC Asheville.
- John Dawson displayed his sharpshooting ability against Coastal Carolina, hitting a
trio of three-pointers in the final 3:05 to push the Flames to victory. After missing the first
11 games due to the NCAA transfer rule, Dawson is averaging 13.0 ppg in his first six
contests, which includes a career-high 18 points versus the Chanticleers. The redshirt
sophomore has posted double-digit scoring figures in five of six games.
- Evan Maxwell enters Saturday’s contest ninth in the country in field goal percentage
(.662). The 6-10 big man will look to bounce back after going 14-of-29 (.489) from the field
in the last four contests.
Youth Movement
The Flames will rely heavily on fresh faces during the 2015-16 season, as Liberty
returns just 16.5 percent of its scoring, 13 percent of its rebounding and 13 percent of its
total assists from last year.
In addition, Liberty sports one of the youngest rosters in NCAA Division I, this
season, with 11 out of 12 players being underclassmen (approximately 92 percent). The
Flames are comprised of six freshmen and five sophomores.
Youngest Programs in NCAA Division I - Based on Percentage of Underclassmen
Liberty - 92%
Ohio State - 85%
Fairleigh Dickinson - 85%

Notes and Anecdotes
- Liberty snapped a 12-game skid and picked up its first Big South win of the season with
its victory at Coastal Carolina, Wednesday night. Coincidentally, the Flames accomplished
the same exact feat last season when they hosted Campbell, defeating the Fighting Camels, 73-60 (Feb. 10, 2015).
- Before taking over as the head coach at Campbell for the 2013-14 season, Kevin McGeehan spent the last eight years as an assistant coach at Richmond. During his tenure,
McGeehan helped guide the Spiders to five postseason appearances, including a trip to
the 2011 NCAA Sweet 16. While McGeehan was at Richmond, the Spiders hosted the
Flames twice, defeating Liberty on both occasions (77-61 – Dec. 28, 2011, 84-42 – Nov.
9, 2012).
- During Ritchie McKay’s first tenure with the Flames, Liberty squared off with Campbell
on two occasions in the 2007-08 season. The Flames were edged inside Campbell’s former arena (Carter Gym), 73-70, on Dec. 15, 2007. Liberty hosted Campbell just 13 days
later (Dec. 13, 2007), picking up the 68-61 win over the Camels. At the time of the pair of
matchups, Campbell was a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Campbell returned to
the Big South for the 2011-12 season.

News and Notes vs. Coastal Carolina
- A clutch three-pointer by John Dawson with 13 ticks remaining propelled the Flames
over Coastal Carolina inside the HTC Center, 62-61, Wednesday evening. The victory
snapped a 12-game skid for the Liberty men’s basketball team.
- Following the go-ahead trey, the Chanticleers got an attempt at a game-winning shot, but
came up short. Due to the Flames’ defensive pressure, Shivaughn Wiggins was forced
to heave up a short jumper with three seconds remaining. Freshman guard Lovell Cabbil
grabbed the rebound and hurled the ball down the court to seal the Flames’ win.
- With the victory, Liberty moved to 4-13 overall and 1-3 in Big South action. The Flames’
road win marks their first since the 2013-14 season, when Liberty defeated Campbell, 7959, at Gore Arena on Feb. 22, 2014. Coastal Carolina is now 8-7 on the year and 2-3 in
conference play. Liberty leads the all-time series over the Chanticleers, 29-26.
- Dawson paced the Flames with a career-high 18 points, followed by Anthony Fields (11)
and Cabbil (11). Nine of Dawson’s 18 points came in the final 3:05, hitting three trifectas.
Cabbil also grabbed six rebounds and a career-high five steals in addition to his point
total. Elijah Wilson paced the Chanticleers with 15 points.
- Coastal Carolina shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) for the contest. The Flames finished with
45.3 percent shooting (24-of-53), including 51.9 percent (14-of-27) in the second period.
- Liberty knocked down 12 three-pointers on the night, tying its second-best mark of the
season. The Flames also tied a season-best for fewest turnovers with seven, while converting the Chanticleers’ 12 miscues into 13 points.
Last time vs. Campbell – Feb. 10, 2015
- The Liberty men’s basketball team ended its 12-game skid in an emphatic way, defeating Campbell inside the Vines Center, 73-60. Trailing by eight early in the second half, the
Flames used a 23-2 run to turn the tide and pick up their first Big South win this season.
- David Andoh paced the Flames with 16 points, followed by Theo Johnson who chipped
in 15. Ryan Kemrite was a big contributor to the second half surge, finishing with four
treys and a career-high 14 points for the second straight contest.
- Kyre’ Hamer led the Camels with 16 points, while Reco McCarter had 13 tallies. Campbell’s leading scorer D.J. Mason, who came into the contest averaging 12.6 ppg, was held
to one point by the Flames’ defense.
- Liberty finished with its second best shooting performance of the season, going 24-of-53
(55.8 percent) from the field. The Camels were held to 35.1 percent shooting (20-of-57),
including 22.6 percent (7-of-31) in the second half.
- The Flames connected on timely three-pointers, going 8-of-12 (66.7 percent) from downtown. Campbell hit 11 treys on the night, nine of which came in the first half. The Camels
followed up with 2-of-18 long-range shooting (11.1 percent) during the second period.
Keeping it Close in Conference
Despite being 1-3 in conference play, the Flames have been competitive in Big South action. In its conference opener at Radford, Liberty rallied from being 10 points down to lead
by one with 1:07 left. The Highlanders answered with five straight points to seal the 56-52
final. In two of their conference games, the Flames have erased large scoring deficits.
Liberty trailed by 16 in the first half against Charleston Southern before coming back to
lead by two with 1:58 left in the period. This past Saturday, the Flames nearly eradicated
a 22-point deficit (14:18 left in the second), cutting it to five with 1:06 left.
Tee for Three
The Flames’ 14 made treys versus Summit (Nov. 14) were the most since Liberty
knocked down 15 in a 95-80 win over Charleston Southern during the second season of
head coach Ritchie McKay’s first tenure with the Flames (Feb. 14, 2009). The 14 triples
are also tied for fourth all-time in program history for a single game. In fact, five out of the
six Liberty squads that have hit 14 more three-pointers in a game have been coached
by Ritchie McKay. The one exception is the 1992-93 team that swished 14 treys against
Averett on Dec. 18, 1993. McKay’s 2008-09 team holds the school record with 17 trifectas
versus VMI (March 4, 2008).
Halftime Buzzer Beaters
Liberty has taken the momentum into the locker room on several occasions, this
season, hitting buzzer beating shots before halftime in three straight games. Sophomore
guard Ryan Kemrite kicked things off with a three-pointer at the end of the half in Liberty’s
game versus William & Mary, putting the Flames up 38-35. In the following contest against
Central Penn, freshman guard Sam Worman drained a jumper with two ticks left to give
Liberty a 40-21 halftime. In the Flames’ first game away from the Vines Center, sophomore guard/forward A.C. Reid hit a three-pointer before the buzzer, allowing Liberty to
take a 34-33 lead over Appalachian State inside the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

Liberty Inks 5 for 2016-17
Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of
five players to attend Liberty during the 2016-17 academic year – Josiah Talbert, Brock
Gardner, Xzavier Barmore, Hayden Koval and Brody Hicks.
“When we were at Liberty the first time, we had a class that ended up being highly
acclaimed,” McKay said. “And although that class achieved much, this is as excited as I
have ever been about a recruiting class in their overall fit for our university, their playing
ability and their character as a whole.”
A three-year varsity player at Olathe East High School in Olathe, Kan., Talbert
earned all-conference honors in 2015. The 6-9 forward averaged 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks as a junior, leading Olathe East to the 2015 state semifinals and
a third-place finish. In addition to playing under coaches Jim Super and Joe Mundweiler
at Olathe East, Talbert was also a member of the KC Run GMC summer travel team,
one of the top AAU programs in the nation. His brother, Ezra, is currently a redshirt
freshman with the Flames.
An ESPN three-star recruit, Gardner plays for coaches James and Paul Brown at
Tri-City Christian Academy in Chandler, Ariz. As a junior, the 6-7 guard averaged 25.8
points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.1 blocks and 4.3 assists was named CAA Arizona
State Player of the Year three straight seasons (2013-15). Gardner also led Tri-City
to the state championship in 2013 and 2014 and was named state tournament MVP.
Gardner currently has 1,735 career points, 653 rebounds, 103 blocks with a 62 shooting
percentage from the field. In addition to his high school accomplishments, Gardner also
played for the Arizona Warriors summer travel team and Coach Curtis Ekmark.
Barmore is a 6-1 point guard who currently plays for Seneca High School in Seneca,
S.C. While under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Padgett, he earned all-state honors
and was an all-area selection three straight seasons (2013-15). Barmore averaged 25.9
points, 5.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 4.3 steals and shot 41 percent from three-point range
during his junior year and holds the school record for most points in a single game (51).
In addition to his high school accomplishments, he also played summer travel AAU for
the highly successful, faith-based program Upward Stars in South Carolina.
Koval is a 7-0 center who currently plays for head coach Rob Davis at CHANT
Homeschool in Prosper, Texas. He earned all-regional homeschool honors in 2015,
all-tournament honors for the National Homeschool Tournament twice (2014-15) and alltournament for the Texas Homeschool State Tournament three straight seasons (201315).
Hicks is a 6-3 guard who currently plays for head coach Jacob Gruse at Cave
Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. In 2015, Hicks earned first team all-state, first team
all-region, first team all-conference and was named the Conference 32 Player of the
Year. He averaged 15.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists during his junior season. In
addition to his high school accomplishments, Hicks played summer AAU basketball with
Spectrum Sports Academy coached by Ron Clary.
Veteran Leader
Redshirt senior transfer Anthony Fields is Liberty’s lone senior. After receiving his
degree from Bradley, Fields will be eligible immediately for the Flames.
During his time at Bradley, Fields played in 44 games, making his first career start
on Jan. 31 against Indiana State, this past season. Fields concluded the contest with a
career-high 11 points in 34 minutes. Three days later, the Detroit, Mich., native suffered
a season-ending knee injury.
Fields transferred to Bradley from Wake Forest, where he competed in 24 games as
a true freshman. During his lone season with the Demon Deacons, he earned All-ACC
academic honors.
A graduate of Quality Education Academy in Winston Salem, N.C., Fields helped
lead his team to back-to-back NCSAA Division I national championships, capped by a
26-4 record in 2010-11. Prior to signing with Wake Forest, Fields received offers from
Boston College, Oklahoma, Seton Hall and Wright State.

Bradley Connection
While redshirt senior Anthony Fields spent three seasons at Bradley as a player, Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay is also familiar with the Braves program. McKay served as
an assistant coach at Bradley during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
Hot Hand for Homesley
In Liberty’s game against Western Michigan on Nov. 27, Caleb Homesley set a then
career high with 11 tallies, surpassing his previous personal best of six with a trio of threepointers before the game’s first media timeout. Homesley knocked down a trio of threepointers in a 58-second span, hitting the third trey with 15:40 left in the first period.
Last Time Around at Liberty
Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty’s men’s basketball coach, posting a 39-28 overall record and a 19-13 mark in Big South play. He was
named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2007.
Following a 16-16 record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a
23-12 record in 2008-09. The win total matched the program’s NCAA Division I record for
most wins in a season (Liberty finished the 1996-97 season with a 23-9 overall record).
Liberty finished the 2008-09 season third in the Big South standings, the Flames’ third
double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in 2009-10
and 13-5 in 2010-11).
The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round following a win over Rider.
McKay led one of the top scoring offenses in the Big South and ranked No. 48 in the
nation, averaging 75.5 points per game during the 2008-09 season.
Under McKay’s leadership, forward Anthony Smith (2006-09) finished his career
ranked sixth in program history with 1,754 career points scored. Smith was named All-Big
South first team in 2009, one of two first-team all-conference student-athletes coached by
McKay (Alex McLean in 2008).
McKay brought Seth Curry to Liberty and the rookie made an immediate impact on
the program. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points per game and was named 2009
Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor).
Curry spotlighted McKay’s Top 50 recruiting class in 2008, which was ranked No. 48 in the
country by Basketball Times.
Familiar Faces
Rounding out Ritchie McKay’s staff are three assistant coaches who all bring previous
Liberty coaching expereience back to the program.
Kyle Getter is no stranger to Liberty basketball after serving on McKay’s staff during
the 2008-09 season, helping guide the Flames to a 23-12 record and an appearance in the
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Most recently, Getter was a member
of Mike Jones’ staff at Radford, helping the Highlanders finish 22-12 overall and 12-6 in
the Big South last season. Radford made an appearance in the 2015 College Basketball
Invitational, defeating Delaware State, 78-57, before falling to Vermont, 71-58.
Omar Mance has been a member of the Flames’ coaching staff the last two seasons,
working primarily with Liberty’s wing players while also handling various scouting assignments and recruiting responsibilities. Prior to coming to Liberty, Mance spent three seasons as an assistant at Army under head coach Zach Spiker.
Brad Soucie has the distinction of serving as an assistant under Ritchie McKay every
day of his head coaching career. The partnership began in 1995 when the two helped resurrect the program at Portland State, which had been dormant for 15 years. He followed
McKay to Colorado State and Oregon State and New Mexico, before joining McKay in his
first stint with the Flames (2007-09).
