Princeton TIGERS
(5-2)
Princeton, N.J. - Jadwin Gym - 7 p.m.
Matchup Notes
- This season marks the third straight meeting between the Flames and the Tigers and the
second inside Jadwin Gym. Liberty hosted Princeton during the 2013-14 campaign, falling
to the Tigers, 80-74 (Jan. 4, 2014). Last season, Princeton welcomed Liberty to Jadwin
Gym, defeating the Flames, 65-47 (Dec. 22, 2014).
- When looking at Liberty’s active returners, Ryan Kemrite, Evan Maxwell and A.C. Reid
each appeared in last year’s matchup against the Tigers, but did not score a point. The
only current Flame on the roster during the squad’s first meeting in the 2013-14 season
was Kemrite, who redshirted that year.
- Conversely, nine members of Princeton’s current roster matched up with the Flames,
last season. Steven Cook led the charge for the Tigers, finishing with 16 points, while
Spencer Weisz chipped in 13 tallies.
- Evan Maxwell is currently second in the nation in field goal percentage (.727) according
to the NCAA national statistical rankings. The sophomore center is first in the conference
in field goal percentage and double-doubles (3). Maxwell has also posted double-digit
scoring figures in four straight contests.
Youth Movement
The Flames will rely heavily on fresh faces this season, as Liberty returns just 16.5
percent of its scoring, 13 percent of its rebounding and 13 percent of its total assists
from last year.
In addition, Liberty sports one of the youngest rosters in NCAA Division I, this
season, with 11 out of 12 players being underclassmen (approximately 92 percent). The
Flames are comprised of six freshmen and five sophomores.
Youngest Programs in NCAA Division I - Based on Percentage of Underclassmen
Liberty - 92%
Ohio State - 85%
Fairleigh Dickinson - 85%
Wyoming - 80%

Notes and Anecdotes
- Prior to coaching at Princeton, head coach Mitch Henderson served as an assistant
at Northwestern for 11 seasons (2000-11) under Bill Carmody. During Henderson’s time
there, the Wildcats hosted the Flames on Nov. 24, 2009. The contest served as part of the
Chicago Invitational and resulted in a 69-53 win for the Wildcats.
- Besides Princeton, Liberty has played just one other Ivy League member in program
history. The Flames squared off with Yale on Jan. 8, 2000, defeating the Bulldogs, 67-55.
Liberty used a 13-0 run to start the second half to seal the win. Delawn Grandison led all
scorers with 20 points, followed by Maurice Watkins, who had 16 tallies.
- Princeton sophomore Aaron Young is a native of Falls Church, Va., and played at Virginia
Episcopal School (VES) in Lynchburg, Va. Averaging 13.3 ppg last season, Young was
a First-team All-Virginia Independent Conference Division I honoree in 2014 while leading VES to the VIC state semifinals and earning all-tournament honors. Current Liberty
graduate assistant Stelios Tzoutzis is also an alum of VES. The native of Greece came to
Lynchburg to play for the Fighting Bishops beginning in 2004. Tzoutzis returned to VES
as an assistant in 2011, where helped the team win its first state championship in school
history. VES is located approximately nine miles from Liberty’s campus.
- Princeton is coming off a 78-64 win over Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn. The Flames spent
the week of Thanksgiving in the capital of country music, competing in the Challenge in
Music City inside the Nashville Municipal Auditorium (Nov. 26-29). Liberty squared off
against Appalachian State, Western Michigan and Tulane, dropping all three contests.

Last time out vs. Princeton - Dec. 22, 2014
- Princeton capitalized from long distance, knocking down 10 three-pointers to garner the
65-47 decision. The Tigers moved to 2-0 all-time against the Flames. Liberty’s 47 tallies
marked its second lowest point total of the 2014-15 season.
- Steven Cook paced Princeton with a game-high 16 points, followed by Spencer Weisz,
who chipped in 13 tallies.
- David Andoh and Theo Johnson led the Flames with 10 points, apiece.
- Liberty shot 37.5 percent from the field (15-of-40), while the Tigers finished with 41.7
percent. The Tigers’ 10 treys allowed them to outscore Liberty from the perimeter, 30-3.
Despite forcing 14 turnovers, Liberty committed 21 in the contest, helping Princeton take
advantage of points off turnovers, 27-11.
- Liberty finished the first half shooting 47.6 percent (10-of-21), compared to 44.0 percent
(11-of-25) for the Tigers. Princeton knocked down seven three-pointers in the stanza,
while the Flames managed one attempt from downtown. The Tigers took advantage of
Liberty’s nine turnovers, outscoring the Flames off miscues, 11-3.
20-Point Games
The Flames have had three players finish with 20 or more points in a single game, this
season. Sophomore guard Ryan Kemrite was the first, posting a career-high 22 points
in Liberty’s win over Summit (Nov. 14). Evan Maxwell has accomplished the feat twice,
recording 21 points against Central Penn (Nov. 21) and a career-high 24 versus Radford
(Dec. 3). Most recently, A.C. Reid dropped a career-high 20 points against Charleston
Southern (Dec. 5).
Getting Noticed
After playing a total of 59 minutes in the first nine games, freshman guard Ryan
Hiepler received the starting nod in Liberty’s game versus Furman, Tuesday. The Camarillo, Calif., native played a season-high 25 minutes, finishing with five points and two
rebounds.
Tee for Three
The Flames’ 14 made treys versus Summit (Nov. 14) were the most since Liberty
knocked down 15 in a 95-80 win over Charleston Southern during the second season of
head coach Ritchie McKay’s first tenure with the Flames (Feb. 14, 2009). The 14 triples
are also tied for fourth all-time in program history for a single game. In fact, five out of the
six Liberty squads that have hit 14 more three-pointers in a game have been coached
by Ritchie McKay. The one exception is the 1992-93 team that swished 14 treys against
Averett on Dec. 18, 1993. McKay’s 2008-09 team holds the school record with 17 trifectas
versus VMI (March 4, 2008).
Mr. Versatility
Despite being one of the smaller players on Liberty’s roster (6-3, 155), freshman
guard Lovell Cabbil is second on the team in blocked shots with five. The first player to
sign with Liberty following the return of Ritchie McKay, Cabbil is currently second on the
team in scoring (10.7 ppg), while leading the Flames in steals (16). The freshman is also
third on the team in rebounding (3.4 rpg), which includes a season-best eight in Liberty’s
season-opener against Covenant. Cabbil led the Flames to a 64-62 victory with a pair of
game-winning free throws. The following night, he finished with a career-high 19 points
against Summit, recording all of his tallies in the first half.
Halftime Buzzer Beaters
Liberty has taken the momentum into the locker room on several occasions, this
season, hitting buzzer beating shots before halftime in three straight games. Sophomore
guard Ryan Kemrite kicked things off with a three-pointer at the end of the half in Liberty’s
game versus William & Mary, putting the Flames up 38-35. In the following contest against
Central Penn, freshman guard Sam Worman drained a jumper with two ticks left to give
Liberty a 40-21 halftime. In the Flames’ first game away from the Vines Center, sophomore guard/forward A.C. Reid hit a three-pointer before the buzzer, allowing Liberty to
take a 34-33 lead over Appalachian State inside the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.

Liberty Inks 5 for 2016-17
Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of
five players to attend Liberty during the 2016-17 academic year – Josiah Talbert, Brock
Gardner, Xzavier Barmore, Hayden Koval and Brody Hicks.
“When we were at Liberty the first time, we had a class that ended up being highly
acclaimed,” McKay said. “And although that class achieved much, this is as excited as I
have ever been about a recruiting class in their overall fit for our university, their playing
ability and their character as a whole.”
A three-year varsity player at Olathe East High School in Olathe, Kan., Talbert
earned all-conference honors in 2015. The 6-9 forward averaged 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks as a junior, leading Olathe East to the 2015 state semifinals and
a third-place finish. In addition to playing under coaches Jim Super and Joe Mundweiler
at Olathe East, Talbert was also a member of the KC Run GMC summer travel team,
one of the top AAU programs in the nation. His brother, Ezra, is currently a redshirt
freshman with the Flames.
An ESPN three-star recruit, Gardner plays for coaches James and Paul Brown at
Tri-City Christian Academy in Chandler, Ariz. As a junior, the 6-7 guard averaged 25.8
points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.1 blocks and 4.3 assists was named CAA Arizona
State Player of the Year three straight seasons (2013-15). Gardner also led Tri-City
to the state championship in 2013 and 2014 and was named state tournament MVP.
Gardner currently has 1,735 career points, 653 rebounds, 103 blocks with a 62 shooting
percentage from the field. In addition to his high school accomplishments, Gardner also
played for the Arizona Warriors summer travel team and Coach Curtis Ekmark.
Barmore is a 6-1 point guard who currently plays for Seneca High School in Seneca,
S.C. While under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Padgett, he earned all-state honors
and was an all-area selection three straight seasons (2013-15). Barmore averaged 25.9
points, 5.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 4.3 steals and shot 41 percent from three-point range
during his junior year and holds the school record for most points in a single game (51).
In addition to his high school accomplishments, he also played summer travel AAU for
the highly successful, faith-based program Upward Stars in South Carolina.
Koval is a 7-0 center who currently plays for head coach Rob Davis at CHANT
Homeschool in Prosper, Texas. He earned all-regional homeschool honors in 2015,
all-tournament honors for the National Homeschool Tournament twice (2014-15) and alltournament for the Texas Homeschool State Tournament three straight seasons (201315).
Hicks is a 6-3 guard who currently plays for head coach Jacob Gruse at Cave
Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. In 2015, Hicks earned first team all-state, first team
all-region, first team all-conference and was named the Conference 32 Player of the
Year. He averaged 15.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists during his junior season. In
addition to his high school accomplishments, Hicks played summer AAU basketball with
Spectrum Sports Academy coached by Ron Clary.
Veteran Leader
Redshirt senior transfer Anthony Fields is Liberty’s lone senior. After receiving his
degree from Bradley, Fields will be eligible immediately for the Flames.
During his time at Bradley, Fields played in 44 games, making his first career start
on Jan. 31 against Indiana State, this past season. Fields concluded the contest with a
career-high 11 points in 34 minutes. Three days later, the Detroit, Mich., native suffered
a season-ending knee injury.
Fields transferred to Bradley from Wake Forest, where he competed in 24 games as
a true freshman. During his lone season with the Demon Deacons, he earned All-ACC
academic honors.
A graduate of Quality Education Academy in Winston Salem, N.C., Fields helped
lead his team to back-to-back NCSAA Division I national championships, capped by a
26-4 record in 2010-11. Prior to signing with Wake Forest, Fields received offers from
Boston College, Oklahoma, Seton Hall and Wright State.

Bradley Connection
While redshirt senior Anthony Fields spent three seasons at Bradley as a player, Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay is also familiar with the Braves program. McKay served as
an assistant coach at Bradley during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
Last Time Around at Liberty
Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty’s men’s basketball coach, posting a 39-28 overall record and a 19-13 mark in Big South play. He was
named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2007.
Following a 16-16 record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a
23-12 record in 2008-09. The win total matched the program’s NCAA Division I record for
most wins in a season (Liberty finished the 1996-97 season with a 23-9 overall record).
Liberty finished the 2008-09 season third in the Big South standings, the Flames’ third
double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in 2009-10
and 13-5 in 2010-11).
The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round following a win over Rider.
McKay led one of the top scoring offenses in the Big South and ranked No. 48 in the
nation, averaging 75.5 points per game during the 2008-09 season.
Under McKay’s leadership, forward Anthony Smith (2006-09) finished his career
ranked sixth in program history with 1,754 career points scored. Smith was named All-Big
South first team in 2009, one of two first-team all-conference student-athletes coached by
McKay (Alex McLean in 2008).
McKay brought Seth Curry to Liberty and the rookie made an immediate impact on
the program. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points per game and was named 2009
Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor).
Curry spotlighted McKay’s Top 50 recruiting class in 2008, which was ranked No. 48 in the
country by Basketball Times.
Familiar Faces
Rounding out Ritchie McKay’s staff are three assistant coaches who all bring previous
Liberty coaching expereience back to the program.
Kyle Getter is no stranger to Liberty basketball after serving on McKay’s staff during
the 2008-09 season, helping guide the Flames to a 23-12 record and an appearance in the
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Most recently, Getter was a member
of Mike Jones’ staff at Radford, helping the Highlanders finish 22-12 overall and 12-6 in
the Big South last season. Radford made an appearance in the 2015 College Basketball
Invitational, defeating Delaware State, 78-57, before falling to Vermont, 71-58.
Omar Mance has been a member of the Flames’ coaching staff the last two seasons,
working primarily with Liberty’s wing players while also handling various scouting assignments and recruiting responsibilities. Prior to coming to Liberty, Mance spent three seasons as an assistant at Army under head coach Zach Spiker.
Brad Soucie has the distinction of serving as an assistant under Ritchie McKay every
day of his head coaching career. The partnership began in 1995 when the two helped resurrect the program at Portland State, which had been dormant for 15 years. He followed
McKay to Colorado State and Oregon State and New Mexico, before joining McKay in his
first stint with the Flames (2007-09).
