Environmental Exposure Grand Rounds Wednesday, May 4, 2016 7:00am to 8:00am in the Freeman Building, Rooms B144 E-Cigarettes Speakers: Commissioner Edward Ehlinger, MD, MSPH, Minnesota Department of Health Jon B. Cole, MD, Hennepin County Medical Center, Minnesota Poison Center Abstract: Please join us as Dr. Jon Cole discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment of acute nicotine poisoning. Commissioner Ehlinger will be presenting on E-cigarettes and nicotine’s effect on the adolescent brain. Public health is facing a rapidly growing challenge with the rising popularity of electronic nicotine delivery devices (ENDS), such as e-cigarettes, e-hookahs, hookah pens, vape pens, and vape pipes. These battery-operated devices are designed to deliver nicotine, flavorings and other chemicals. Electronic cigarette use is on the rise among youth and now exceeds combustible tobacco use in Minnesota. With the increased use, it is important to understand the health risks of nicotine to an adolescent brain development and fetal development. We will also highlight steps taken by state and local governments to limit youth access to ENDS and reduce accidental nicotine poisonings.
