1
Lyme disease and human anaplasmosis are caused by bites from blacklegged ticks (deer ticks), which are found in wooded areas of
north-central, eastern, and southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Most Minnesotans with Lyme disease or HA lived or
traveled to these areas. County of residence does not always indicate county of tick exposure.
2
West Nile virus disease is caused by bites from Culex tarsalis mosquitoes. These mosquitoes can be found anywhere in Minnesota, but
risk is greatest in agricultural areas of western and central Minnesota. County of residence does not always indicate county of mosquito
exposure.
For more information on tick- and mosquito-borne diseases, please refer to the MDH Vector-borne Diseases webpage
(http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/dtopics/vectorborne/index.html) or call 651-201-5414.
For information on definitions, sources of information, prevention and other information about these or other reportable diseases,
please contact the Acute Disease Epidemiology Section at 651/201-5414.

Definitions: Children under 18 arrested for Part I crimes: murder, rape, robbery,
aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, vehicle theft and arson. Not all children arrested for
serious crimes committed these crimes, and some children are not arrested for crimes that
they actually committed.
The rate per 1,000 is the total number of children arrested for Part I crimes divided by the
estimated number of children ages 10-17 multiplied by 1,000. These rates are useful for
comparison purposes and trends, but may be low because of the inclusion of children in
the younger age ranges and the inclusion of girls, both of whom have few arrests.
Data Source: Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Rates are not given 10 pr
less events.

WIC Participants - Unduplicated Counts: The total number of pregnant, post-partum and nursing women, infants and
children less than 5 years of age who received WIC vouchers. County level data are determined by combining unduplicated
participants of all clinics within a county's boundaries. State total does not equal the sum of the counties because participants
may move counties during the year.
2
Reporting period is January 1 through December 31. Excludes records with unknown data or errors
Data in this report were prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Pediatric Nutrition
Surveillance System and the Pregnancy Nutrition Surveillance System.
The Minnesota-specific data depicted in this table represent the status of children
participating in the MN WIC Program in 2008-2010. Trend data do not necessarily include the same children from one year to
the next, and so should not be interpreted to reflect changes in individual children’s health status. Rather the changes reflect
health status of the population over time.
Infants and children participating in WIC come from families with limited resources. Only families with incomes at or below
185% of federal poverty (or eligible to receive benefits from another program with comparable income guidelines), are
eligible for WIC services. All children participating in WIC are considered at nutritional risk.
3
Based on 2000 CDC growth chart percentiles for BMI-for-age for children 2 years of age and older. Overweight children are
in the 85th to less than 95th percentile category and obese children are in the equal to or greater than 95th percentile category
4
Prepregnancy overweight - Based on 2009 IOM report "Weight Gain During Pregnancy": underweight (BMI <18.5), normal
weight (BMI 18.5 to 24.9), overweight (BMI 25.0 to 29.0) Obese (BMI >30.0)

Per 100,000 Population. The per capita measurement of dentist-to-population ratio provides a limited
approach to estimating the distribution of the dentist workforce. Ratios can be used to make comparisons
among counties that differ in population size, but it doesn’t account for transportation across state and county
borders to obtain or deliver services.

Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI): Numbers are traumatic brain injury events, (vs. people or hospitalizations). Events are nonfatal at
time of discharge from the final acute care hospital. Only Minnesota residents are included. Total Minnesota values include events
with unknown counties. Minnesota residents who were injured and/or hospitalized out of state and reported to the MDH are also
included. All rates are per 100,000 people and were age adjusted to the US 2000 standard population.

Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI): Numbers are spinal cord injury events, (vs. people or hospitalizations). Events are nonfatal at
time of discharge from the final acute care hospital. Only Minnesota residents are included. Total Minnesota values
include events with unknown counties. Minnesota residents who were injured and/or hospitalized out of state and reported
to the MDH are also included. All rates are per 100,000 people and were age adjusted to the US 2000 standard population.
