Description:
The Wootton Parkway Bridge Rehabilitation project will repair the steel beams and supports
underneath the bridge and perform minor repairs on top of the bridge. Repairs will include
cleaning and painting the steel beams, sealing cracks in the concrete, replacing spalled (bad)
concrete, and replacing traffic barriers. Due to its size, the Wootton Parkway Bridge is
considered a long span, making it part of the city’s Bridge Rehabilitation Program.
The majority of the work will be under the bridge. There will be traffic impacts along Wootton
Parkway during concrete repairs to the topside of the bridge. One northbound lane of the
three-lane bridge may be closed weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Daytime and nighttime
closures of the one northbound lane are permitted in summer when school is out of session.
Adjacent sidewalks and the asphalt bike path are required to remain open at all times.
Purpose:
As part of Rockville’s Bridge Rehabilitation program, the Department of Public Works will repair
bridges within City Rights-of-way. Inspections of the 19 City-owned long span bridges (longer
than 20 feet) are federally funded and occur every two years. The program meets the Mayor and
Council’s goal of sustainable infrastructure. Bridge repair priorities are based on structural
improvements recommended in the bridge inspection reports.
Location:
Wootton Parkway between Thomas S. Wootton High School and Greenplace Terrace. See the
map on the reverse side of this advisory.
Timeline:
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2016. Another advisory will be mailed at least two
weeks before construction begins.
Cost:
$750,000 (construction cost estimated).
