The Blue Devils scored the game's first 13 points and raced out to a 50-22 halftime lead while shooting 57.6% for the game and holding a 40-27 rebounding edge. Kendrec Ferrara came off of the bench to pace the Paladins with 13 points, while fellow junior Stephen Croone added 12 points. Furman shot 10-of-12 at the foul line and managed 10 offensive rebounds against the Blue Devils in the first meeting between the schools since 1965. The game marked Furman's first encounter with a ranked team since a 71-53 loss at No. 19 UCF in December of 2010. Monday’s contest marks the fourth all-time meeting between the Paladins and the Liberty Flames with Furman holding a 3-0 series lead. Furman swept a home-and-home with Liberty during the 1990-91 season by claiming an 87-76 win at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium before winning 67-62 in Lynchburg, Va. Last season, Stephen Croone posted career-highs with 40 points and 11 rebounds to help Furman hold off a furious Liberty comeback in an 86-83 Paladin victory on December 20, 2013, at Timmons Arena. Croone’s 40-point performance was the first for a Paladin since Roy Simpson netted 45 points versus East Carolina on February 5, 1972. The Paladins offset a 36% shooting effort by draining 10-of-19 threepoint attempts against the Flames. William Gates Jr. scored 16 points, while Kendrec Ferrara added 15 points for Furman. Antwan Burrus led the Flames with 19 points and seven rebounds. Despite missing the Paladins season-opening loss to College of Charleston with a concussion, junior Stephen Croone leads the Paladins averaging 13 points, three assists and three rebounds per game. The 2014 All-Southern Conference pick and 2014-15 Preseason All-SoCon selection has connected on 10-of-11 trips to the charity stripe ad scored in double figures in all three games he has played this season. Croone ranks as the SoCon’s leading returning scorer after averaging 19.1 points per game a year ago. The Covington, Ga., native also connected on a league-best 192 free throw attempts last season. Through four games in the 2014-15 season, the Paladins have made and attempted more free throws (60-of-91) than their opponents (28-of-46) in every game. The Paladins made 10-of-12 free throw attempts, while Duke made just 6-of-10 at the charity stripe on Wednesday. Despite the advantage in trips to the foul line, Furman has connected on just 65.9% of its free throws and its opponents have made just 60.9%. Furman has won four straight over Big South opponents and posted a 7-1 record against the Big South since the start of the 2009-10 campaign. Furman has been forced to play without its full lineup in the early portion of the schedule. Junior point guard Stephen Croone, an All-SoCon selection and the Southern Conference's leading returning scorer, missed the seasonopener versus College of Charleston with a concussion. Guard Aaron O'Neill, the squad's only senior and Croone's starting backcourt mate in the Paladins preseason exhibition versus North Greenville, also missed the game due to a concussion. Freshman forward Geoff Beans was suspended prior to the exhibition opener for a violation of team rules and has not played yet this season. Guard Aaron O’Neill carries a famous last name as he is the son of former New York Yankess and Cincinnati Reds right fielder Paul O’Neill. The elder O’Neill now serves as a regular analyst for New York Yankees games on the YES Network. Freshman Daniel Fowler has made an immediate impact for the Paladins by starting in all four games and averaging 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. The Acworth, Ga., native has shot 54.5% from the floor and played an average of 27.5 minutes per game in his first four collegiate outings. Fowler was named CRONS Southern Conference Freshman of the Week last week after contributing eight points, four rebounds and three assists in an 84-65 win over Appalachian State before tallying 11 points and career-best three assists in a loss to UC Davis. After missing Furman’s final 14 games last season with a broken foot, sophomore Kris Acox has shown in the early going that he is healthy for the 2014-15 season. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native has averaged 7.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season while shooting 71.4% from the floor. Acox posted career-highs with 14 points and 10 rebounds to propel Furman to an 84-65 victory over former SoCon member and current Sun Belt Conference member Appalachian State on November 19, at Timmons Arena. Last season, Acox averaged just 1.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in a little over 18 minutes of action per game in the Paladins’ first eight contests before contribut- PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Kris Acox (A-cox) Kevin Chuisseu (CHWEE-soo) FURMAN BASKETBALL QUICK FACTS GENERAL INFORMATION School ........................................................................ By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became the “Paladins” on September 15, 1961. A native of St. Paul, Minn., and former Furman assistant, Medved took the reigns of the Paladin basketball program after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Colorado State University, where he helped guide the Rams to four consecutive postseason appearances, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 and 2013. “We are excited that Niko Medved is rejoining the Furman community as our new men’s basketball coach,” said Furman Athletics Director Dr. Gary Clark, at the time of the hiring. “Niko knows Furman and the Greenville community and will make an immediate impact on our program. His experience in rebuilding Colorado State basketball will serve him well as we re-launch Furman basketball.” Working under head coach Larry Eustachy in 2012-13, Medved and the Rams posted a 26-9 record, finished second in the Mountain West Conference and earned Colorado State’s first back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips since 1990. The No. 8 seeded Rams ousted Missouriin their tournament opener before falling to eventual national champion Louisville in the round of 32. The 2013 Rams set a school record for wins (26), led the MWC in scoring during league play, ranked first in the nation in rebounding margin and earned the school its first top 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll since 1954. Preceding his year at Minnesota, he spent seven seasons as an assistant at Furman under head coach Larry Davis and served as the school’s interim head coach in the spring of 2006. Medved was instrumental in helping rebuild a struggling Paladin program that had posted just five winning seasons in 19 years before his arrival. Furman registered winning seasons in each of Medved’s last three years in Greenville and four of the final five seasons. He helped the Paladins reach their first Southern Conference championship game in over 20 years in 2002, and the school achieved its first winning record in league play in 23 years during the 2004-05 campaign. Medved helped the Paladins recruit the highest-scoring freshman class in the country in 2004, which included future 1,000-point scorers Robby Bostain, Moussa Diagne and Eric Webb. Medved started his career at the University of Minnesota in 1992, where he was a student manager and assistant. He also served as the associate head coach at Macalester College from 1997-1999 and worked four years as an instructor at the prestigious Nike All-America camp. He completed his B.S. in kinesiology in 1997 and his master’s in sport management in 1999, both from the University of Minnesota. In August 2011, Medved married the former Erica Nesselroad of Morgantown, W.Va. Nesselroad, a Furman graduate, played three seasons as a member of the Paladin softball team.
