FURMAN PALADIN POINTS
 Jahlil Okafor scored 24 points on 10-of-12
shooting and Amile Jefferson added 16 points
and 12 rebounds to lead fourth-ranked Duke to a
93-54 victory over Furman on Wednesday night
at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C. The
Blue Devils scored the game's first 13 points and
raced out to a 50-22 halftime lead while shooting
57.6% for the game and holding a 40-27 rebounding edge. Kendrec Ferrara came off of the bench
to pace the Paladins with 13 points, while fellow
junior Stephen Croone added 12 points. Furman shot 10-of-12 at the foul line and managed
10 offensive rebounds against the Blue Devils in
the first meeting between the schools since 1965.
The game marked Furman's first encounter with a
ranked team since a 71-53 loss at No. 19 UCF in
December of 2010.
 Monday’s contest marks the fourth all-time
meeting between the Paladins and the Liberty
Flames with Furman holding a 3-0 series lead.
Furman swept a home-and-home with Liberty
during the 1990-91 season by claiming an 87-76
win at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium before
winning 67-62 in Lynchburg, Va. Last season,
Stephen Croone posted career-highs with 40 points
and 11 rebounds to help Furman hold off a furious
Liberty comeback in an 86-83 Paladin victory on
December 20, 2013, at Timmons Arena. Croone’s
40-point performance was the first for a Paladin
since Roy Simpson netted 45 points versus East
Carolina on February 5, 1972. The Paladins offset
a 36% shooting effort by draining 10-of-19 threepoint attempts against the Flames. William Gates
Jr. scored 16 points, while Kendrec Ferrara added
15 points for Furman. Antwan Burrus led the
Flames with 19 points and seven rebounds.
 Despite missing the Paladins season-opening
loss to College of Charleston with a concussion,
junior Stephen Croone leads the Paladins averaging 13 points, three assists and three rebounds per
game. The 2014 All-Southern Conference pick
and 2014-15 Preseason All-SoCon selection has
connected on 10-of-11 trips to the charity stripe ad
scored in double figures in all three games he has
played this season. Croone ranks as the SoCon’s
leading returning scorer after averaging 19.1 points
per game a year ago. The Covington, Ga., native
also connected on a league-best 192 free throw
attempts last season.
 Through four games in the 2014-15 season,
the Paladins have made and attempted more free
throws (60-of-91) than their opponents (28-of-46)
in every game. The Paladins made 10-of-12 free
throw attempts, while Duke made just 6-of-10
at the charity stripe on Wednesday. Despite the
advantage in trips to the foul line, Furman has
connected on just 65.9% of its free throws and its
opponents have made just 60.9%.

 Furman's 86-83 win over Liberty last December completed a 3-0 season
sweep of Big South Conference opponents by the Paladins that also included
wins over Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb. Furman has won four straight over
Big South opponents and posted a 7-1 record against the Big South since the
start of the 2009-10 campaign.
 Furman has been forced to play without its full lineup in the early portion
of the schedule. Junior point guard Stephen Croone, an All-SoCon selection
and the Southern Conference's leading returning scorer, missed the seasonopener versus College of Charleston with a concussion. Guard Aaron O'Neill,
the squad's only senior and Croone's starting backcourt mate in the Paladins
preseason exhibition versus North Greenville, also missed the game due to a
concussion. Freshman forward Geoff Beans was suspended prior to the exhibition opener for a violation of team rules and has not played yet this season.
 Guard Aaron O’Neill carries a famous last name as he is the son of former
New York Yankess and Cincinnati Reds right fielder Paul O’Neill. The elder
O’Neill now serves as a regular analyst for New York Yankees games on the
YES Network.
 Freshman Daniel Fowler has made an immediate impact for the Paladins by
starting in all four games and averaging 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.
The Acworth, Ga., native has shot 54.5% from the floor and played an average
of 27.5 minutes per game in his first four collegiate outings. Fowler was named
CRONS Southern Conference Freshman of the Week last week after contributing eight points, four rebounds and three assists in an 84-65 win over Appalachian State before tallying 11 points and career-best three assists in a loss to UC
Davis.
 After missing Furman’s final 14 games last season with a broken foot,
sophomore Kris Acox has shown in the early going that he is healthy for the
2014-15 season. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native has averaged 7.5 points and
7.3 rebounds per game this season while shooting 71.4% from the floor. Acox
posted career-highs with 14 points and 10 rebounds to propel Furman to an
84-65 victory over former SoCon member and current Sun Belt Conference
member Appalachian State on November 19, at Timmons Arena. Last season,
Acox averaged just 1.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in a little over 18
minutes of action per game in the Paladins’ first eight contests before contribut-

ORIGIN OF THE PALADIN
Furman University athletic teams were known by different names until
the 1961 school year. The baseball team was “Hornets,” the football
team “Hurricane,” and the basketball team “Paladins.”
The basketball team was dubbed “Paladins” by a Greenville sportswriter
in the 1930s. By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became the “Paladins” on September 15, 1961. A Paladin is a knight on a
horse and the recognized mascot of Furman University’s athletic teams.

“I am thrilled to be the head coach at Furman University,” said Medved, who served
as an assistant coach for the Paladins for seven seasons from 2000-06. “This is an
exciting time to be at Furman; it is an outstanding university with tremendous leadership. This is a homecoming for my wife and me. Greenville is a beautiful community with great people, and we
couldn’t be happier to return to the Upstate. I have high expectations for the program, and I look forward to leading Furman basketball to new heights.”

During his time as an assistant at Colorado State, Medved helped engineer acomplete revitalization of the Rams
basketball program as part of head coach Tim Miles’ staff. After going 7-25 in 2008 and 9-22 the following
season, Medved’s recruiting and player development paid dividends as the Rams posted a 16-16 mark in 2010 to
secure a berth in the College Basketball Invitational. A 19-13 record the next season led to a NIT trip before Colorado State fashioned a 20-12 season in 2011-12 to notch the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since
2003 and its first 20-win campaign since 1998.

Niko Medved was named Furman University’s 21st head men’s basketball coach on
April 12, 2013.
A native of St. Paul, Minn., and former Furman assistant, Medved took the reigns
of the Paladin basketball program after spending the previous six seasons as an
assistant coach at Colorado State University, where he helped guide the Rams to
four consecutive postseason appearances, including back-to-back trips to the NCAA
Tournament in 2012 and 2013.
“We are excited that Niko Medved is rejoining the Furman community as our new
men’s basketball coach,” said Furman Athletics Director Dr. Gary Clark, at the time
of the hiring. “Niko knows Furman and the Greenville community and will make
an immediate impact on our program. His experience in rebuilding Colorado State
basketball will serve him well as we re-launch Furman basketball.”
Working under head coach Larry Eustachy in 2012-13, Medved and the Rams posted a 26-9 record, finished
second in the Mountain West Conference and earned Colorado State’s first back-to-back NCAA Tournament
trips since 1990. The No. 8 seeded Rams ousted Missouriin their tournament opener before falling to eventual
national champion Louisville in the round of 32. The 2013 Rams set a school record for wins (26), led the MWC
in scoring during league play, ranked first in the nation in rebounding margin and earned the school its first top 25
ranking in the Associated Press poll since 1954.
Preceding his year at Minnesota, he spent seven seasons as an assistant at Furman under head coach Larry Davis
and served as the school’s interim head coach in the spring of 2006. Medved was instrumental in helping rebuild
a struggling Paladin program that had posted just five winning seasons in 19 years before his arrival. Furman
registered winning seasons in each of Medved’s last three years in Greenville and four of the final five seasons.
He helped the Paladins reach their first Southern Conference championship game in over 20 years in 2002, and the
school achieved its first winning record in league play in 23 years during the 2004-05 campaign. Medved helped
the Paladins recruit the highest-scoring freshman class in the country in 2004, which included future 1,000-point
scorers Robby Bostain, Moussa Diagne and Eric Webb.
Medved started his career at the University of Minnesota in 1992, where he was a student manager and assistant.
He also served as the associate head coach at Macalester College from 1997-1999 and worked four years as an instructor at the prestigious Nike All-America camp. He completed his B.S. in kinesiology in 1997 and his master’s
in sport management in 1999, both from the University of Minnesota.
In August 2011, Medved married the former Erica Nesselroad of Morgantown, W.Va. Nesselroad, a Furman
graduate, played three seasons as a member of the Paladin softball team.

 Furman University, founded in 1826, is located in Greenville, S.C., and has
an enrollment of 2,700. Among the best known Furman grads are John Broadus
Watson, founder of behavioral psychology, Charles H. Townes, Nobel Prize
winner for the development of the maser and laser; and Richard W. Riley,
former governor of South Carolina and secretary of education in the Clinton
administration. Furman has produced numerous professional athletes including
PGA golfer Brad Faxon, LPGA Hall-of-Fame golfers Betsy King and Beth Daniel, Minnesota Vikings All-Pro fullback Jerome Felton, and U.S. National Soccer Team standouts Clint Dempsey and Ricardo Clark. Furman’s most famous
former athlete is Corbin, Ky., native Frank Selvy. The three-time all-american
guard led the nation in scoring twice (1953, 1954) and set an NCAA record with
100 points versus Newberry College on February 13, 1954. Selvy went on to
the NBA where he played along side Jerry West and Elgin Baylor with the Los
Angeles Lakers. The point guard and No. 1 pick averaged 10.8 points per game
over nine seasons and helped the Lakers to two NBA Finals.
 The 2014-15 campaign marks the 101st season of intercollegiate basketball at
Furman. On October 30, 1908, Furman defeated South Carolina, 21-19, in the
first college basketball game in the state’s history.
 The Furman men’s basketball team was tabbed to finish eighth in the Southern
Conference’s preseason polling of both the league’s media and 10 head coaches.
The Paladins posted a 9-21 overall record and placed ninth in the Southern
Conference with a 3-13 league mark a year ago.
 Paladin head coach Niko Medved announced a pair of new additions to the
the Furman men’s basketball program during the November signing period.
Andrew Brown, a 6-foot-4 guard from Travelers Rest, S.C., and Jalen Williams,
a 6-foot-8 post player from Greenville, S.C., each signed a national letter of
intent to join the Paladin program next season. Brown led Travelers Rest High
School to a 21-5 record, Region 2-AAA title and state playoff appearance while
earning region player of the year honors and AAA all-state accolades during the
2013-14 campaign. Williams averaged better than 14 points, 12 rebounds and
three blocks per game to earn all-region honors as a junior for the class AAAA
Wade Hampton High School Generals.
