When to Suspect and Test for Measles
Remember the clinical case definition for measles:
• A generalized maculopapular rash, and
• Fever of 101oF (38.3oC) or higher, and
• Cough, coryza, or conjunctivitis

Note:
• If patient has known exposure to a confirmed case, and the timing of symptoms is compatible with
prodromal phase of measles, advise isolation and test when/if clinical case definition is met.
• Suspicion should be higher if the suspect case is unvaccinated.
• Consider and test for other causes of generalized rash and fever such as Strep rash (Scarlet fever), Roseola,
Fifth Disease, Kawasaki disease and drug reactions.
