National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2016
Overview
Minnesota AIDS Facts
National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
(NBHAAD), held annually on Feb. 7, encourages
African American and African immigrant
communities to get educated, get tested, get
treated, and get involved with HIV/AIDS
prevention. The theme for NBHAAD 2016 is, “I
Am My Brother’s and Sister’s Keeper: Fight
HIV/AIDS!”
As of 12/31/14, a total of 10,718 HIV and AIDS
cases have been reported to the Minnesota
Department of Health (MDH) since the
epidemic began:
How to Participate
Organizations may wish to provide or host
activities that can help raise awareness about
HIV/AIDS within their communities:

2,126 (20 percent) African American
▪
823 (7 percent) African-born
▪
652 African Americans have died
▪
60 African-born persons have died
▪
1,719 African Americans currently living
with HIV (includes those who have
relocated to Minnesota)
▪
1,100 African-born persons currently living
with HIV (includes those who have
relocated to Minnesota)
▪
Host an event to re-sound the alarm
▪
Articles/editorials/news releases in
newspapers and newsletters
307 new HIV cases were reported in 2014:

Community forums on AIDS
▪
▪
Rapid HIV testing opportunities at
community locations and events
136 (44 percent) cases among whites: rate
3.1 per 100,000

▪
Agency/clinic-based HIV testing for walk-ins
arranged and scheduled
61 (20 percent) cases among African
Americans: rate 31.8 per 100,000
▪
▪
Public exhibits to distribute HIV prevention
education materials
52 (17 percent) cases among African-born:
rate 67.0 per 100,000

Community marches and rallies
Statewide rates for African Americans were
10 times greater than whites
▪
Social media, blogs and mobile text
messaging used to promote NBHAAD

Rates for African-born communities were
22 times greater than whites
