socialenvironmentinwhichtherightsanddignityofallthestaff,faculty,and
studentsoftheUniversitycommunityarerespected.Amongthemanythings
wedotomaintainsuchanenvironment,theUniversityprohibitsbehaviors
thatrisetothelevelofbullyingasdescribedbelow.
UnderthisUniversitypolicy,prohibitedbullyingisdefinedasconductofany
sortdirectedatanotherthatissevere,pervasiveorpersistent,andisofa
naturethatwouldcauseareasonablepersoninthevictim'sposition
substantialemotionaldistressandunderminehisorherabilitytowork,study
orparticipateinhisorherregularlifeactivitiesorparticipateintheactivities
oftheUniversity,andactuallydoescausethevictimsubstantialemotional
distressandunderminesthevictim'sabilitytowork,study,orparticipatein
thevictim'sregularlifeactivitiesorparticipateintheactivitiesofthe
University.
Thispolicyisnotintendedtoandwillnotbeappliedinawaythatwould
violaterightstoacademicfreedomandfreedomofexpression,norwillitbe
interpretedinawaythatunderminesasupervisor’sauthorityto
appropriatelymanagetheirworkunit.Thisdefinitionreservestothe
University,infurtheranceofitseducationalmission,therighttoaddress
conductthatwouldnotnecessarilybeunlawful.Itisnotintendedtocreate
individualorgrouprights,whethercontractualorotherwise,thatdonotexist
underexistinglaw.

OfficeofEquityandInclusionforconsultationandpossibleinvestigation.
