The mission of the YMCA Mentoring Program is to provide court involved youth with a mentoring relationship that helps them cope with their life circumstances and develop the life-skills needed to make positive choices. Reflecting on your own life, perhaps you remember someone you could trust and turn to for support and encouragement, someone who showed you how to believe in yourself. However, we know that not all children get the support they need to thrive; therefore, YMCA Mentors provide support, guidance, friendship, encouragement, and caring opportunities. “I have always believed in mentoring. There are many young people who need a guiding hand and open heart. I have had many mentors in my life.” -- FE, Retired MCPS Principal YMCA Mentor Who can be a YMCA Mentor? • Caring, mature and responsible men and women over 21 years old. • Adults who have a sincere interest in spending time helping children • Adults willing to commit to spend a minimum of one hour a week for one year to serve as positive role models and help young people address barriers to academic achievement and positive family and community relationships.
