I am co-oping at Oracle. They are a software conglomerate based out of California Philadelphia is really big. We chose to live closer to work,
that develops enterprise hardware and software products. I work at a branch of Oracle,
Oracle Primavera, in Philadelphia. I’m an application engineer, and I work on an unreleased product for Oracles Project-Planning division. I spend most of my day developing
the backend (for any Golisano majors reading this) using the Spring framework, JPQL,
etc. however, I used to do front end work near the beginning of my coop.
It’s kind of relaxed here, so it wasn’t too difficult to assert myself into company
culture. There’s a lot of young people so it’s not too intimidating. I, however, work
mostly with a team out in Jerusalem, so I would say that’s the most difficult adversity I
face, the time zones are really different, and there’s a brief window of opportunity to get
your questions answered. Everyone is really nice though, so it works out.
I came here with a few SE / CS students from RIT. I actually live with someone in
my major right now that I had known from my first two years at school. Total, there’s 6
of us. There are a few other coops from U.Penn, and we sit with them at lunch frequently,
Outside of work, I got a membership at LA Fitness, so for a while I was going to
the gym quite a bit. Lately, I’ve been studying an algorithms book. Most of the time, I
hang out with people from my co-op, including RIT students, who happen to be down
here in my apartment. Lately on the weekends, I’ve been up to Rochester for random
occasions and a few times some friends came down here to visit me; it’s fun to take them
around Philly
which is more in the suburban part of the city, but the inner city
is only a few minutes away. I’d say the thing I like the most is the
accessibility. Whatever stores or places you went to back home,
they probably have here. And the mall in King of Prussia is the
second biggest mall in America. It’s my favorite place to go (if I
have money).
My favorite memories so far are just seeing all of us
students hanging out together after work, just talking. It’s always
a nice feeling to be with a combination of people from RIT and
new people that we’ve met. Not a lot of college students get an
opportunity to just be adults in the real world, so we’re lucky to get
that chance through RIT
My biggest tip would be to put yourself out there and go do
something, on and off the job. Being far away from what you are
used to is hard and if you don’t meet new people you get bored
pretty easily, so don’t be afraid to invite people out to dinner or to
the movies. I’ve enjoyed my time most when I was hanging out
with other co-ops and doing new things.
