The course focuses on the use of statistics in research and includes mastering the following tools: How to define the research question; How to design experiments; How to collect, manage and analyze data; How to interpret the results from statistical research. Descriptive and inferential statistics will be discussed in detail and understanding the difference between them will be a main objective. Other topics of discussion include: an introduction to relevant mathematical tools; descriptive methods (i.e., tabular, graphical and numerical methods); sampling design and sampling distributions; probability theory; continuous probability distributions; discrete probability distributions; interval estimation; confidence intervals; and hypothesis testing. The course also introduces the use of the computers and software as tools in statistical analysis. Students will learn how to describe and analyze data using statistical software (Excel). Goals &Objectives At the end of this course, students will be expected to: 1. Use ordinary and business statistics tools to make business and organizational decisions. 2. Understand fundamental probability formulas and be able to use them to assist in making good business decisions. 3. Be familiar with the process of hypothesis testing and the creation of confidence intervals. 4. Have the ability to interpret the results from hypothesis testing and make inferences. 5. Have a basic understanding of correlation and linear regression. These educational objectives address the following: 1. Field Specific Knowledge and Experience 2. Interpersonal and Teamwork Skills 3. Written Communication Skills 4. Oral Communication Skills 5. Information Literacy General Expectations Arrive promptly, be prepared, participate actively and exhibit respect. Follow HISD/Reagan HS rules and policies. Complete assignments, tests, etc. in a timely fashion. Always do your best! Required Materials Pencils, Erasers, Notebook paper, Textbook TI83 or 84 graphing calculators will be provided in class but it would be helpful to have your own calculator. One ream of copy paper (optional), you will receive a 2 free homework pass if you bring to class. It is suggested that you have a designated Statistics folder or section in a three-ring binder in which to keep your handouts and homework paper organized. Grading Unit tests or Projects: 40%, Quizzes: 20%, Classwork: 25%, Homework:15%. A:(90 or above) B:(80 to 89) C:(75 to 79) D:(70 to 74) F:(69 or below). Parents and students may use PS Connect on the HISD website to track grades on Gradespeed. Students may retake a unit test under circumstances. Feel free to email me if you have concerns or questions. Make-up Work Being absent from class is not a good thing. YOU are responsible to take care of what you have missed. If you have been absent you must get your classwork from the blue bin in the back of the room. This work should be turned in within 3 days of returning to school. If you missed a test because of an excused absence, you must make up the missed test within 5 class days. All make-up tests will be taken before or after school or during the lunch period. Let me know when you plan to make up a test.
