Cancer in Minnesota, 2009: 24-Month Report
This brief report presents cancer incidence and mortality counts and rates in Minnesota for 2009, the
most recent year for which case-reporting to the Minnesota Cancer Surveillance System (MCSS) is
considered complete.
Incidence data are based on cases reported to MCSS as of December 2011, approximately 24 months
after the end of the diagnosis year. Compared to the preliminary report for 2009 based on cases
reported by approximately 12 months after the end of the diagnosis year, 2,331 more cases have been
identified, a 9.7% increase. The exact number of new cancers diagnosed in 2009 will continue to
fluctuate over time, but we do not anticipate marked changes. For cancers diagnosed in 2008, only 107
new cases (0.4%) were added between 24 months and 36 months after the end of the diagnosis year.
The number of cancer deaths for 2009 are considered final, and are the same as those reported in the
preliminary report for 2009.
The incidence and mortality rates reported here may vary somewhat from those presented in future
reports if population estimates for 2009 are revised.
Table 1 shows the number of new cancers diagnosed among Minnesota residents during 2009 by gender
and anatomic site of the cancer and the corresponding age-adjusted rate per 100,000 persons per year.
Table 2 shows the number of cancer deaths among Minnesota residents during 2009 by gender and
anatomic site of the cancer and the corresponding age-adjusted rate per 100,000 persons per year.
The statistical methods and definitions used and limitations of the data presented in this report are the
same as those detailed in “Cancer in Minnesota, 1988-2008,” available on the MCSS Web site
(http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/hpcd/cdee/mcss/).

identified solely through death certificates, and were reported to MCSS as of December 2011. In situ
cancers except those of the urinary bladder were excluded. Ovary excludes borderline cases and
histologies 8442, 8451, 8472 and 8473. Population estimates were obtained from the SEER Program
(http://seer.cancer.gov/popdata).
